will shavings be ok for my snakes bedding???
or will they hurt him in some way??

I used pine shavings for my garter, and she did fine... but I know there are some types that are harmful... I think most use Aspen, but I'm not sure. Sorry I wasn't more helpful. o.o;

Use aspen only.
Cedar is HARMFULL and there is some belief that pine may be too.
Stick with aspen and your snke will be fine.:)
I agree with cranwill. Hardwood shavings (excluding walnut) such as Aspen are your best bet. All softwoods (cedar, pine, spruce, etc) contain oils which are toxic to some degree. Cedar is the most toxic and will kill herps, causing severe neurological damage, the milder ones such as pine are quite mild and have been known to irritate the respiratory tract. Hope this helped :)
you'll also find it's difficult to keep humidity up with many of the shavings out there, they're intended to be absorbant to soak up the waste from the small furry mammals you feed to your snake.
