So while exploring the internet to try and figure out what kind of snake my dad got me, I ran into this forum. After quite a while of lurking I decided to join. :D

A little about me... I've had lizards and arachnids my whole life. My first iguana I got when I was two, he was three. I had him till I was 6 and had to move. I then had Multiple Tarantulas, bearded dragons, etc. But never a snake.

If you wanna skip my sob stories you can... They start now.

I got my first snake three years ago. She was a 16 year old normal ball python who was dumped off at my friends house. My friend used to run a small rescue for reptiles but due to a new child she had no time for the animals. So I took her. Not fully understanding what I signed up for. $400 later I found out she was about 16 yo, had a broken jaw that had an infection in it and that she would never be able to eat on her own again. I was ok with that. I was taught how to inject her with insulin, and how to force feed her. Started with liquid food, then pinkies. She began getting better at eating, after a while I barely had to do anything. But She started getting worse. She started fighting the feedings and such... So I eventually decided it would be better to just put her down.

A year ago I decided to try again with a baby snake this time. I got myself a beautiful little boy Brazilian Rainbow Boa. I fell in love with him. He was spunky and so curious about everything. I loved my little Hans. One day I went to Arizona to visit my family. On my way home I wrecked my car. I ended up stuck there for five days instead of the two I planned on being gone for. Well, the day I got home, my snake was skinny. He looked drained of all fluid, but he was alive. His jaw was dislocated as well. I went to work with the one goal of finding out how to fix his dislocated jaw. Two in a half hours later I go home for lunch, and he's dead. I was devastated. This is back in October.

In November, my dad bought me the little guy I have now to cheer me up. I'm not sure what exactly he is, but he's a cutie. He got him from petco so I HIGHLY doubt this guy is Colombian Red Tail. I would like to post pics but I gotta get my post count up first.

Thats my snake story, sadly. lol I haven't had the best luck, but I'm trying to not let bad things happen again.

Hi and welcome.

How did the BRB dislocate his jaw? and 5 days on his own in the correct set up would not have made him skinny or drained of all fluid, to result in death.

Can you tell us what condition's he was kept in?

Good luck with you new snake post pics of both snake and enclosure.

He was kept in a twenty gallon long ( he was only three months old) with sphagnum moss, a hide, a large log to climb on, a large water dish ( big enough for him to soak in but not too deep) a heating lamp I used once in a while, and a heating pad. His cage was 80 on the hot end and the cool side varied a lot between 68 and 73 degrees. His humidity was usually around 55 to 65 percent and when I was home I would constanly check on him. I would hold him every other day, he fed on time, pooped on time, and shed on time for the two months I had him. I lived in kind of cold conditions so when I left I covered his lid ( I have a mesh wire lid) so heat would stay in and left him like that. I had a friend check on him three times while I was gone and everything was the same. Temps, he had water, he was active... So I figured he was fine.

Ohh.. yeah I'm pretty sure he dislocated his jaw trying to bite my cat through the glass of his tank. The same friend let my cat in and out while I was gone and there was a ton of cat hair on my snakes tank lid where it was covered.
