Should I save this snake?

Hello all! I live in Michigan and the snow still comes and goes. It is in a condo community and there is a snake burrowed in the crack of the sidewalk. I'd figure I'd let it warm up and find a new home but spring is taking forever. We went on a walk with a neighbor with our dogs and she kept poking at it. I'm afraid someone else will come along and purposefully step on/kill it. I want it to live, I think its just a common garder snake. Im thinking of digging a new burrow off to the side and moving it gently. Temps around here are still 30-40. Here is a pic

Heck yes. it is a garter snake. and I would bring it inside for about the next two weeks, and then on a nice 60 degree + day, set it free near where it was.

A 10 gallon aquarium with a cover over the top would do fine for such a short time.

Garters are fun little snakes. We found one late last year that had been injured. Took her in, fed her nightcrawlers, and now she's on pinkies. She was a little nippy for a few weeks but is now calm enough to handle.

I joke that if we set her free once the weather warms up, she'll be knocking on the door once a week for a free meal.

We went out today and she's stuck pretty good. Its sunny and 47*. We tried wedging the crack open larger and digging around to free her up. I don't want to pull her hard for fear of disrupting her vertebrae. She is more in the sun so hopefully she'll get energy to dislodge herself. I don't know much more I can do.

I went and bought a crowbar and was carefully able to open the crack to give her more room so we could dislodge her. She came out fine. We brought her inside with intentions of warming her up and getting her water or food. Unfortunately she never came around. RIP.

This was upsetting :-/ , atleast you did your part. I always like to see people helping wild animals, as it is based simply on mercy.

You did more than 99.9% of people would ever do. Be proud of that. Sad that you couldn't save her but you tried. Good effort there.

Dont get discouraged i think its very nice how you went out of your way with time and money to try and save the litte guy. Most people would have ignored and/or killed it. A+ effort. :D
