They're starting to come out already.
Rescued this little Pituophis catenifer catenifer from the road.
As is customary he recieved a day of water and rest before being released in a safe area. I can't wait to see what pops up this year, hopefully it's better than the last.

Thanks, two more not so lucky on the road today :(
I hope to see the garters make a comeback this year. Not too many years ago there would be a regular by my dock swimming along slurping up minnows. The last two years it seems like kings and garters have almost disappeared...

What a great looking snake, the patterns look almost like a corn snake on the dorsal surface in that second picture

We are in a similar boat here. Sure I can go 5 minutes from here and find a ton of common garter snakes but only occasionaly can I find a milk snake. Then north of here we can find rattlesnakes but I actually don't want to find them so ... you get it :)

I have absolutely zero hot experience and massasauga rattle snakes and small and pack a punch so I have no interest in finding them...the hard way...so to speak. Plus I herp with my kids so safety is a priority. IfI was 20 something I would be all over them but at 40 something...no need .

Only kidding, most people don't go hunting for venomous pit vipers....

Thanks! I want to get a GoPole so I can follow them on the ground at their level without it being so shaky. Also if I had the pole I could get right up on hots and catch their fangs in slow motion.:D

That's super cool. It must be neat to live in California and get to see such a wide variety of species. :) Thanks for posting pics for us northerners! :P
