BOWIE COUNTY, TX (KSLA) - Authorities believe a homeowner's response to finding a snake in her yard may have led to the fire that destroyed her house Wednesday.


The fire sparked at a home in Bowie County, TX just before 7 p.m.


"While cleaning up, she saw snake, threw gasoline on the snake, lit the snake on fire," said Deputy Randall Baggett with the Bowie County Sheriff's Office. "The snake went into the brush pile and the brush pile caught the home on fire."

I don't like the 'Snake possibly burns down home" headline. Um, no. "Hysterical, cruel lady torches home and damages her neighbor's home" is more like it.

It is sad. A stupid fear of an animal that is completely harmless cost this lady her home. That's why education is important and showing people that snakes aren't to be feared. That poor snake suffered an agonizing death because of stupidity. This is why it is so important that stuff like the Lacey Act is repealed. We need to educate and show people that snakes aren't something to be feared.
