This is not a for sale ad, but I have decided to get rid of the roughneck for now, only for a few reasons. I will be moving next week however I realized building the permanent enclosure may take me some time as I dont have much experience. I posted an ad on craigslist, and after screening about 200 people who knew nothing (wanted to house him with a savannah monitor in an all screen enclosure was my favorite), I found someone on the NY border who already has a rudi baby, seems to know what hes talking about, and the enclosure was very nice. I will be getting rid of him (losing about 80 bucks too :-/) , and I have to say , I learned my lesson about purchasing before having the permanent enclosure. Will start the permanent enclosure (can go as big as I want in the new house so no restrictions on what I can house, can make a 20 foot enclosure I have an entire floor in the house for reptiles) .

I'm glad you found him a good home.

Glad you found him a good home, that is no easy task. I would love to see a twenty foot cage, monitors deserve to be in big cages like that, not in tiny boxes.

I'm no carpenter by any means, so I haven't figured out exactly what the plan is. I am finally moving into a large house (I am in a 2 bedroom apt) and the original owner was a dentist, so the basement was finished and has central heat and tile floor. I know there is some issues with basement cages, but I will think of something. Its either one big cage like I said, and a small area for other things , or a few medium sized cages and different species...what would you guys do? 21 feet long or say, 3 cages side by side, 7 feet wide each? Tough decision.....(no I'm not planning to get three 7 foot cages and overwhelm myself right away, its just a question for those who have the experience)

yes they do..Plus it means live plants stand a better chance, which is a plus for the keeper and the monitor. Enclosure looks nicer, the monitor looks nicer, plus the monitor has a lot more mental stimulation as well as stuff to block sight lines, meaning they feel more secure. Everyone wins.
It's up to you. I personally would go for the 21 footer, but it comes down to what works best for you. If you are going to build it, you could do it with wood as is usual, or you could do it with cinderblock or brick, which might work better for a cage that large.

I think I'll go with wood, in case I ever decide that I want to break it down or something. Now....which species do you think would be ideal in that cage size, and how many of them? With a cage that size, would it be best to just install house windows? It would be alot of glass to make an entire side of glass. I was thinking large windows from home depot or something, and a regular door to walk in. Wow I'm getting excited :S

You could go as big as waters or niles if you wanted to, though I personally would throw three or four medium sized monitors in there and watch them make use of every inch of it. You might just go with some rudis.

Yea I do like the rudis, I feel like 21 feet would be great for the right size species to thrive in, and barely enough for a larger species, so I dont wanna go as big as blackthroat/nile/water or croc monitor. What other options are there for rudi sized monitors besides the dumerils (not a fan) with decent temperaments.
That can be housed as a trio or so?

That can be housed as a trio or so?Let's see.. There is the indicus complex, though some of those species are very shy. Savs, argus, or sand monitors would be the right size. My top picks would be Blue Tail Monitors, Sand Monitors, or Rudis, but honestly it's what you like that matters.

Am thinking argus...I just dont like the way adult savannahs look, maybe its the way the head looks...Idk.

May I suggest peach throat monitor. I recently got one and I'm very happy with the outgoing/curious personality and not aggressive nature. Also will grow to a
Medium siZe (4-5feet) and could be housed in a nice tall "arboreal" type enclosure.

DONT SAY ARBOREAL UNLESS YOU HAVE A TREE IN YOUR CAGE 100 FEET TALL!!!!!!!!!!!
Jokes aside: Arent peach throats supposed to be skittish normally?

I haven't worked with them, but my impression is that (once they've settled in and learned you aren't a predator) they usually are outgoing in that they are usually out exploring their cage. However, they don't like being touched or handled at all, and usually won't want to interact except to eat. If I'm wrong then by all means correct me, that's just what I've heard.

All the ones with nice colors tend to be that way :-/ haha, I really like the peach throats though, they have same "dinosaur" look to the head that roughnecks do, almost like girl version of a rudi. Pink, no rough skin, and more expensive lol
