View Full Version : Coastal or Bredli?
Hi guys. I'm mostly a Sand boa guy, but I've been looking at Carpet pythons for as long as I can remember. Now I have a spare 4x2x3ish viv and I've decided a carpet would probably suit it in there.
I've Been looking at Coastal and Bredli's but I'm finding it hard to decide. Does anyone have experience with both species? How much does their husbandry differ? And temperament?
And pictures are always welcome :)

Pick the one you like the look of the best. The husbandry/ temperment differences are minimal to non existant. Welcome to the madness called morelia. Once you get a carpet there is no going back. Great snakes to have. Busy, typicaly easy going after they grow a bit. Carpets can be nippy when young. Easy to keep for the most part.
You want pics? I don't have either of what you mentioned but these are some of my carpets to start the addiction ;)

Woah, that yellow Carpet is stunning. Not being all that familiar with carpet morphs mind if I ask what that one is called?
As far as Coastal/Bredli - I personally like the looks of the Coastal more. As Terranaut pointed out though, you should get the one that you like the most.

He is a very impressive snake. I may have to look more into Carpets after those pictures xD

Also look at Tigers, granite, albino, zebra, well the list is still growing. There are many more morphs out there than my list.
Great snakes to get into. I love my royals, colubrids and boas but carpets are IMHO the best all around snake for a "pet". Active, calm, nice looking (almost mean looking but not mean) awesome eaters . Yeah carpets are the best.
What size bin/tank do they require? (I have heard conflicting ideas)
I had a friend who had one (a coastal ironically) But it passed away a while back. I don't remember what size tank he kept his in. I remember he had to buy several though.
-also, I did not mean to take over the topic-

I doubt we have taken it over. They did ask for pics :)
I keep mine in a 4x2x4 but it could be a foot shorter and I doubt my snakes would mind. I have 2 in there now but have 2 enclosures this size.

My female is about 7.5' and my male about 6'
Plenty of room.
That looks very do-able. Though I will have to wait until I move into a property I own myself to build such an inclosure. I doubt my land lord would be thrilled if he found that in my apartment.
Also, about how much to they weigh? I am a bit hesitant to buy a large snake because I have some nerve issues in my neck. I wouldn't plan on holding it every second of every day, but I do like to get my animals out every once in a while.

They are not thick like a boa but more thin and agile. I seldom put mine on my neck but rather over a shoulder. Most carpets are not huge powerhouses but slender climbers.
My shoulder isn't much better than my neck. Just me being picky.
There are some really cool morphs that I had never looked up before. I really may have to look into them future when I have the space. I shouldn't have joined here, there are so many snakes I have found browsing through that I really want.

It happens ;)
Until I actually have the space, I will have to just enjoy looking at pictures c:
Thank you for sharing and putting up with my crazy questions.
Awesome, I do love to see pics :) and cheers for the advice. Valid also asked some of the questions I was thinking so thank you too.
From what I've read Bredli's are thicker in general and coastal's are meant to be one of the larger species. I don't like making these sort of decisions.

If you want a small carpet then a coastal or a bredli isn't for you. I would be looking at Irian jayas or Jungle carpet pythons. The JAG morph in carpets is very pretty but it's not a guarantee on their size as there a mixed sub-specie morph.

Don't worry, I want the size. I'm not worried if I get a hatchling and it turns out to be a smaller male, but I definitely wouldn't mind something on the larger end of the scale :)

Don't know if this is an issue where you are, but I chose a bredli over coastal because it's a lot easier for me to keep things hot and dry versus warm and humid. Otherwise it's just a matter of personal preference.

Not really a problem in the UK, but I'm leaning towards Bredli as I believe they have a little more girth.

Is this a jungle? Male or female as it seems pretty big :)
A shop local to me has some jungles in now, and I believe they are high yellows. I'm now torn between 3 species, and seeing yours hasn't helped. They are just so pretty....

Yup. She is a 7.5 ft female jungle. She is great. Almost seemed to appreciate me rescuing her from the douche who owned her before me. She was in a 18" square enclosure at 7+' long. She was a missle of hate when I brought her home. Only took a few days and she mellowed right out. The kids love her.

I love that you let your kids handle the snakes. My siblings won't let their kids near my snake, and mine is only about a foot long xD
I really do love that colouration though.

That's awesome c:
I would love to share the hobby, but the rest of my family members are pretty anti-snake, or any reptile for that matter. If I didn't know better I would swear I was adopted.
I love the bottom pic, it looks like your kid has a super long chin (I know it's his arm) lol.
I don't even know how you could possibly fit her in an 18" enclosure. I'm actually leaning on the jungle now. I'll research more into it before I get the snake but what do you do for humidity?

coastals are the largest of the carpets mate, average length of 2.5 metres, how ever larger specimens can reach 4 metres
Bredl are really nice snakes, but as far as i know...
they have been classed as a seperate species and are no longer classed as a carpet
they are found in a very remote area, with no access to other carpets, scientists confirmed they are different from the rest of the morelia
you should have a look at all carpets that are out there,as there are some really stunning crosses and pure sub species,to choose from
cheers shaun
p.s.i must warn you...
carpets are very addictive and not many folk stop at just 1 carpet python;)

Bredle's are even more impressive in person, im yet to see a picture that has ever done one justice imho. I was never a big fan of them until I seen one in person, that red color and and that rainbow shine really pops on them, but it next to impossible to catch on camera.
