Targonne, are you worried about controlling the humidity in your enclosure? It seems like with those high wattage bulbs so far from the substrate, and all that ventilation, that it would be difficult to keep the entire enclosure at the humidity levels you want. Is that the case or do you simply have a high level of humidity there already?

Beautiful monitors by the way!

At the moment with that amount os substrate, the humidity is quite high.

However we are making more ventilation holes, and it migth go down... we are planning on getting a mistking next month to help compensate it, and yes in general Sintra is very wet almost rain forrest like :D

look at the link to get an idea the vegetation we have put inside was picked from our garden to :P i ll post pictures later.

What worries me atm, is that the cold hide drops down to 18 degrees in the nigth, so i will cover it for now. as i dont want them to be cold. and i need to find a way to put a heat matt there.

Wow, ya, I just looked your area up online and it says a low humidity day is 65%, with an average more around 80%. Definitely makes it easier for keeping monitors and other reptiles!

I know there are keepers in England who use tube heaters for their substrate. You can apparently bury it right in the dirt without worry, unlike the heat mats. Ive never used one but Im sure one of the English guys can chime in here.

Morning guys,

Our female dumirili finaly ate yesterday, she still doesn't take mice, but oh well

she seems to love shrimp and fish. i didn't cut the fish, and it was a bit to big...

so during the video, she really shows why dumirili are know-ed to be messy eaters... and let me just say that it will be very hard to make the fish smell go away in the next couple of weeks :D

I know the video is a bit long, but i was mesmerized with the scene in front of me.

Hi, you have a couple of beautiful monitors, I wish you all the best with them. I`ll guess the water is cool/cold, you really need to make sure it`s heated to the high 20`sC (80 to 85f), so if they decide to soak for some time their core temps don`t drop too low. I suspect if the monitor had been sufficiently warmed up it would have taken that fish without a problem (I don`t think the fish was too big).
You mentioned the lowest ambient temp in the enclosure was 67f, that`s much too low, I wouldn`t allow it to drop below 21c, preferably 24C (72 to 75f) either day or night (or was that low temp before the animals were put inside)?
If you`re interested in the electric bar heaters, just type those words into your search engine, here in England they`re available from "Ebay" (fairly cheap to buy, and very economical to run).

The temp grandient goes from 40's to 22ish on the cold side, the water in the pool is heated by a ceramic emitter above it, i haven't measured the temp of the water but its not cold.

The 17 degrees, were on the left side hole, i have covered it for the time being as it is way to cold. so i don t want them there. and we are looking into expanding the pool and installing a pump. being that they like the water so much.

regarding the fish, i witnessed the save behavior exactly with the male, he shreded the fish for 15 minutes before he choose to eat it, and you could perfectly see he could have swallowed it whole. he also draged it to the water like the female.

We will be installing a radiant heating pannel on the cold side, i m currently testing one. and i will look at ebay as soon as i get paid again :D

thank you for the help ^^

and when people before said they were messy eaters i didn't realise what they ment? now i do :)

Hi again, thanks for the details. Are those temps ambient (air), or is the 40`s C the surface temp at the basking site? It should be between approx 50 to 60c (surface).
Try offering them a few crabs, then you might see them pulling them apart before eating!
It`s best to heat the water container with an aquarium heater (obviously the wattage depends on ammount of water/size of pond), but they are quite cheap to buy, and extremely economical to run 24/7.

I ll take a look into it :)

the surface temp on the basking spot is in the high 40's, i can lower the lamps a bit more and get higher as needed.

Not very sure on what temps to provide yet. and we plan to get some crabs has soon as the sea allows us to go dive :P

So another photo session, i am amazed how calm she can be with me moving around her.

Altough when i tried to touch her, she didn't hiss, but she tail whipped :)

She doesn't seem so at ease with the terrarium has the male. but i guess with time. :D

so look at this beuty.
