View Full Version : Sandfish : Scincus scincus
Does any one know of any reputable breeders in the US ?
I have a niece that absolutely loves watching them at the zoo. She is far to young to own them herself, but I quite enjoy watching them myself. They are one of the few remaining reptiles I would like to add to my collection, FOr both of us to enjoy.
The only places I have found them (though google and Bing ) Are back water reptiles, and general exotics. Other than the fact they are both out of stock consistently - I have not heard very good things about either operation and am very hesitant to buy.

I don't know of anyone who breeds them, I don't think it's been done yet. All the ones I've seen have been WC.
I haven't heard anything about General exotics, but I would not buy from backwater.. Dead and dying animals are the norm based on what I've heard. Try looking on Kingsnake.com and Faunaclassifieds.com.

From what i have found, they are hard to find captive bred. I would recomend going to a expo, you will probably find them there, and it will be great for your niece, to see and maybe touch so many cool animals :D

Pirarucu is right; no one breeds them, so CB is gonna be a no-go.

Just saying, they HAVE been bred, but not on any scale large enough to be able to find CBB animals easily without producing some yourself....
Alright, thank you for the help every one.
I am actually going to an expo today so I will certainly look there.
I will try looking for WC listings as well.

I didn't find what I was looking for.
Sadly my hunt will have to continue.
No one was very helpful in ideas to try to find one either.
The expo I went to had very few herps beside BPs and Crested/leopard Geckos. Hopefully the one later this year will have more variety.

Too many people are after the money, not the challenge of keeping and breeding the more difficult species.. Used to be that at expos you usually saw species you hadn't even heard of before.

Your niece would probably enjoy a blue tongue skink just as much.
She probably would be just as happy- but seeing as I would be the one housing and keeping the lizards , I would rather hold out for a sandfish.
I have nothing against BTS I just have limited space at the moment, and don't want to buy something I am not completely 100% interested in.

I found a sand fish locally at my pet store for $7 they don't ship but I'd be willing to ship it out to you if you pay the cost of the skink + shipping.
I may be ..
Which petstore ?
Did you actually see the lizard , did it look healthy ?
I would not want to purchase a lizards that was sickly to begin with/likely to die in the mail.
Which state do you live in ?

Carter's Pet Store in California.
They get all their animals from a breeder in the bay area, I can take a close look at it tomorrow but it did look healthy. They also have what looks like an emerald tree skink.
If you could get a better look / more info (age etc) Possibly a picture I would be very interested.

They never really know much about the age of the reptiles but it's definitely a baby. I'll take a picture if I make it there.
I don't need the exact age,
just a general idea (Juvenile/adult)
