This is a small UTH that is sealed under plexiglass just to provide a little night time heat, it will be set at 80* and probably will only be used during cold winter months, it is dirty due to the old potting soil all over it. IF NEEDED.... figured I might as well put it in now while I can.

That is it for now, the silicone is drying so once it is dry I will add the soil and get some more pics.

Christmas cactus does well with no direct lighting and is a safe edible plant. Some of the sedum plants will grow in shade areas too. They call for direct sunlight but I have them in my yard in shady areas and they do fine.

Any nursery will carry both, ask if they have any without the fertilizers, insecticides and vermiculite. Also check with your neighbors if they have sedum growing in their yard they will be more than happy to share, it's invasive.

Christmas cactus will be sold anywhere that they sell house plants. They're a hardy plant so very popular. Even the big box stores like Home Depot and Lowes carries them. If you buy there you will need to replant it in soil. I'm not sure how long it takes to grow out the chemicals.

I will try and check Wal-Mart tomorrow, or Lowes. My tort is in potting soil/aspen mix, mostly potting soil though, im hoping i can get it to grow in the tub, but your saying to make sure to let it grow a bit before, so it gets chemicals off?

My concern would be if they have used insecticides or fertilizer it may have been absorbed into the plant. I honestly don't know how long it takes to grow out. You can wash the plant with a mild mix of dish detergent and water. If you can find a friend that grows them they are very easy to take clippings and root them. That way you would be sure that they are safe.

I got a few christmas cactus... about two months ago from Lowes for 50 cents each. I think they were trying to sell of the last of stock after the holiday season. I haven't seen them there since. =/
