How often should i be changing the substrate in my gecko tank?

she has a 2 inch layer of the zilla desert blend and im cleaning out the poop daily,

not looking for a debate on substrates, im happy with this one for this tank, just wondering about cleaning

Few times a year. if you are staying on top of the spot cleaning and getting any soiled or wet sub out of there in a short amount of time there is really no need to keep changing the whole sub out. You can always add some fresh stuff when spot cleaning as well.

once every 3-4 months should do the trick :D

In a natural vivarium, an ecological system develops that helps with decomposition and decreases odors. It develops better if you stir the soil or sand every time you clean out solid wastes to increase aeration and, hence, development of the aerobic bacteria that do the work for you. I don't know how long it would take to develop in the desert blend, though.

I'd do a smell test, as well, probably every month. If it begins to smell bad to you, it's definitely not good for your critter--like breathing toxic fumes--and should be changed.

Good luck!

I change the sand in my tank at about 4 month, although that is when i notice smells. There were a few times when i noticed them earlier, thus changing the substrate after only 2 months
