View Full Version : no followthrough... why???
I have a male/female pair of dragons, not sure of exact age but definitely over a year and a half.... Anyway, there's lots of head bobbing and arm waiving and push-ups going on but no follow up... WHY IS THIS??? Im not really looking to breed them even though I have an awsome looking yellow male, but I do have quite a few people asking me to keep them in mind if they ever do produce eggs so I clutch here and there would be nice. But that's not really my main conserne.... Im more worried as to why something that should come naturally ISN'T. I was thinking maybe I should try to find another male breedie to borrow for a little while to get my male more rev'd up.... it seems like he does the push ups and all the normal stuff but then he looses all interest and just walks away and finds a corner to go lay in... anyone know why this may be????

Things are happening at other times when you are not watching, but they don't mind having their foreplay in front of you?
haha maybe?

Ok.... that may be a possibility (I dought it) so lets say that is what's happening..... lets say there doing there thing while were away, how would I know if she's gravid??? (is that the right way to say pregnant for lizards???) and how long would it take for her to lay eggs???
She might not be ovulating and if so getting another male won't help anything. Not all females will ovulate regularly in captivity, and males will often just display in hopes of getting something started, they seldom mate with girls who aren't "ready". Has she brumated? After coming out of brumation a girl will often ovulate.
It's very easy to tell a gravid girl about a week or two after mating, it looks like she swallowed a sack of marbles whole. Females usually do become gravid after mating, but not always.
It takes 2 to 4 weeks after a successful mating for her to lay the eggs.
Wow.... that fast huh??? 2 to 4 weeks seems pretty quick. Like I said before, Im not actually "trying" to make them breed but when I bought them I knew it would prolly happen some time down the road.... so if they do... then they do, but if they don't... Im not going to try and make them. What exactly do you mean by "Brumated"???? is that another way of saying hibranate? or does that have to do with some kind of temperture cycle of some sort???
Beardies don't actually hibernate, which is a deep winter sleep, it's more of a slowdown and therefore called brumation. Manipulating both light and temperature cycles can force a brumation, but many beardies just do it naturally when daylight hours get shorter. 2 of my adults brumated this winter without me adjusting either day/night cycles or reducing temps.
