Hi! I found this snake in my bathroom. I was wondering what kind of snake it is and how I could take care of it?

I live in Berlin, Germany. Is it a snake that lives in the wild here?

I hope the pictures are clear enough to see what kind of snake it is.

It's a corn snake. I have no idea if they live in Germany but my guess it's an escaped pet.

It is an escaped pet, Corn snakes are a North American species.

Yep. Native to North America. Please don't release it into the wild.

On the topic of not releasing it into the wild, that one looks rather young. They are easy to care for, cheap to keep, tolerate handling well, and stay relatively small. It would be really easy for you to keep it as a pet, and one could always use more snakes in their life!

Do you live in an apartment /multi-family building? If so I would ask around and see if anyone in the building has recently lost a snake. I say that because he looks to be in pretty good shape so he probably hasn't been on the loose for very long. If you recently moved in he might belong to the previous tenant.

Wow! Talk about a surprise when taking a midnight leak.

Yeah, I'd much rather find that in my bathroom than a 5 inch camel spider at my bare feet. I was taking "a midnight leak" one night in bare feet and heard a clicking sound. (it was arachnid feet walking on the tile) I looked down and there was huge camel spider staring at me. Scared the crap out of me! Those things give me the willies bigtime even though they aren't venomous.

Yes that's a corn snake (oder auch Kornnatter im Deutschen). If I remember the typical apartment building in Berlin correctly there is a good chance it belongs to a unit above or below you.

Corn snakes are relatively easy to take care of, but since there is a chance that somebody is tearing up his/her apartment looking for it, I'd knock on some doors instead. Chances are that the snake didn't venture too far.

That's definitely a corn snake. Very easy to care for, doesn't need a HUGE enclosure, very forgiving of beginner mistakes and won't break your bank on heating and feeding. They are a north American species so this little guy escaped. Doesn't surprise me, corn snakes are among the BEST escape artists species.

Any time I've ever found a snake in the bathroom I recognized it because it was one of my own. Lol "oh, there you are!"

I agree. He came from somewhere close (definitely in the building) and probably hasn't been on the loose for terribly long.

camel spiders arent venomous, but cause NASTY infections.

I'm gonna un-hiijack this thread and say congrats on finding a Corn Snake in your bathroom! There are several Corn Snake owners here that should be able to help you, try posting your specific questions in the Corn Snake section, here. (http://www.ssnakess.com/forums/elaphe-guttata-guttata/)

Hi,

just to make sure that there are no misunderstandings I will summarize all you said in German

--> Reptilienstation Berlin - Tierarztpraxis Romanazzi (http://www.reptilienstation.de)

abgeben. Bitte nicht wieder aussetzen, da das Tier gerade bei den derzeitigen Temperaturen draussen keine Überlebensmöglichkeit hätte und ausserdem natürlich nicht bei uns in die Freiheit gehört (Faunenverfälschung).

Here is the translation in English

As mentioned above the snake you found is a cornsnake (Pantherophis guttatus), a nonvenoumus and harmless snake. It does not live here but comes from North America. It is a snake which escaped somebody. If you life in an appartment building, ask your neighbours if anybody misses his snake. Otherwise you can contact a local animal shelter or even better the Berlin reptile shelter.

Please don' t release the snake again, because the snake could not survive the temperatures outside (because it is not prepared for hibernation right now) and of course it does not belong in our nature.

Oooh you lucky devil! I would love to find one of those! And 5" is a very nice size at that.

camel spiders ... but cause NASTY infections.

No more likely than a bite or scratch from most animals -- including cats and dogs. And soligids will not bite unless you are attempting to handle one or have otherwise pinned/grabbed it.

Naah.. it's a young normal colored / wild-type corn snake. (Pantherophis guttatus), also known as red rat snake. Extremely common in the pet trade world-wide. But they are sometimes crossbred to king snakes or milk snakes to create hybrids.
