Had a very eventful weekend! Our BP Skitz has been in blue for roughly a week, and we checked her hiding spot last night just to make sure all was well only to discover she had a perfect shed! This is her first shed in our care, needless to say we are thrilled. We also added another addition to the Herp family...... Our new rescue a hatchling Chinese Water Dragon - Cujo, pics to follow as soon as he settles into his new surroundings! Don't want to stress the little guy / gal out to much. SO as per my usual doing tons and tons of research and seeing what all exciting new things we can do with our terrariums!
We are letting Cujo settle in right now, though he is in quarantine I was curious, when we picked him up I noticed there were springtails in his tank..... Is this problematic? Should I be concerned for my herps? I have read dozens of threads on these guys and one side says they are beneficial and helpful another says they aren't.... I was wondering do I need to eradicate them or should I let them be?
He is also on the thin side, so we are offering him plenty of food at different intervals. Though so far I have only noticed one Mealworm missing..... I am chalking this up to stress from the move right now. We also removed a large number of loose large sized crickets (looked to be to big to be feeding him anyhow, there were around 30-35 in the enclosure)
He was previously on repta-bark substrate, but as I have been reading this can cause impaction if he digest's it, so we have him now on zoo med jungle mix soil and sphagnum moss mixture for substrate.... Anyone use something different?
His temps are now- 90F Basking spot, 84-88F during the daytime, usually hitting a low of 78-80F at night, humidity is right around 65-70% (working on getting that up still). He has plenty of vines / branches to climb on, plants to hide in, and a nice sized pond for soaking and playing in. Though he seems more content to just bask all day and soak a few moments, he hasn't been very active. Hopefully after a few days of settling in we will see a more active happy CWD!
