Hi guys , this is me sitting with my snake , he seems to like laying there without a care in the world .When he was younger , he would go past me , and now he would lay there all day if i had time .I know that snakes are not that kind of pet , but wondered , is there anyone here that sits with there snakes . Yep, we have lap snakes. Most of ours love to just hang with us. Our pythons especially though.
That's a beautiful snake you have! Love the coloration.

How do you tell he does like it or just doesn't care and tolerates you? How do you know what your snake does isn't just him being a snake?
Honestly, this stuff needs to be reported scientifically if it's TRUE because you'd win a nobel prize guaranteed.

I just think he`s cool with hanginy around , as where some reptiles i had were not.

I don't pet mine. There is the BCI who doesn't mind my lap. I don't have to restrain her, she just rests there, body relaxed and breathing slowly. But I think I'm more or less the next convenient basking spot.
The rest of my snakes would be all over the place. My CA king does a cloverleaf pattern with me in the center if I let him go. A few times he returned to poop on me. Not sure what that means. I normally don't let him roam, but he is so active that I just had to try a couple of times to find out what he'd do. ;)

So you're saying because all cornsnakes are docile and tolerate handling that it's affection and they "lap up" attention? You'd be sure to be a nobel prize winner if you can prove that snakes have the cognitive brain function to know and understand such things.
I'm being honest. Write a paper, submit it to be peer reviewed on your findings with your carpet python since you've done what no scientist has yet to do.

Then i shall make myself more clear Aaron . First , i DO NOT think snakes think like humuns , i dont think they think at all , please i am not stupid . I have kept reptiles for 20 years ,and have watched my reptiles up close . I am a animal, reptile lover and DO NOT false my snake to do anything . That is what the thread was about . When he is out of his viv , he will come over to me and rests on me , at his own choice , i pet him and he just lays there relaxed , i`am sure its only for the warmth !! I have had him for 15 years , i`am sure he is relaxed around me by now . Do you follow ?

Now you're backtracking because in previous posts you've stated he seems to enjoy the petting. Like he actually gets something from it.
I'm serious, if you truly think these things write them all down. I'd like someone to actually prove it for the entire world to see.

Ok now your really being funny . In previous posts , what then i meant to say was , that when he comes over to me , he SEEMS to not mind, and he SEEMS to take a stroke under the chin .Its all of his free choice , and YES i think his cool with that . Its really not rocket science , if he did not like it , he would move away , its as simple as that !!!

You're trying to be funny now.
If he DOES like it then make notes and write a paper is what I'm saying. Why be selfish and keep this incredible cognitive snake to yourself?
I think it's false because then all cornsnakes and ball pythons and every other docile animal likes being handled.
You say he'd just move away if he didn't like it and then prior to that just say "it SEEMS" that way. It's plainly obvious that you are coming to the conclusion that he has the ability to 'feel' well above any reported scientific findings prior. Why not report that officially? Stand behind your own statement.

I don't know what to think. Scientific behavioural studies with reptiles are really behind the times, they are discovering new things about lizards and snakes all the time.
What I think is that he doesn't necessary "like" being petted, but after 15 years of conditioning is "used" to it. Just like snakes come to recognize feeding tongs, they can come to recognize and get used to other things, such as their owners. I doubt they "like" their owners, they like warmth and they can become accustomed to things.
Do I make sense?

I dont understand you , and you are just wanting to wind this up . What is wrong with a snake that wants to hang out , there are plenty of times he does not want to be touched or handled . Snakes have bad eyesight and no ears , but they can sense what is around them , it is a fact . What else can i say to you . I think you should write a paper , as you know so much !!!

It's ok to humanize a snake's tolerances. They're pets, we build up their personalities out of their actions, its our way. I dont think Tracy is stupidly saying "He would like nothing more!" or something of the sort.
Don't let the picky attitude wind you up, Tracy.
And now for a completely different topic: I'm not that familiar with non-colubrids, pardon the ignorance. What kind of snake is this?

Papers already are written on my stance. It's where I gather my knowledge. I'm saying someone like you, who sees them differently should publish their findings.
Apparently that suggestion isn't allowed.

Yes but no one is writing one :( It seems that more research is done on mammals & birds than reptiles. I mean they only discovered that varanids have venom in what, 2006? How did they miss THAT all these years?
The problem with snakes is that they are rather difficult to read. They are very alien compared to us, no legs, no ears, their behaviour is quite different from other animals. I think most animals are more intelligent than we give them credit, they are always surprising us.
I know that the brain size = intelligence is a myth (for the most part), considering that mice can be trained to do all kinds of tricks and have the ability to figure things out, yet some animals with larger brains don't *seem* as intelligent.
Even my FISH (an animal that most people consider to be stupid) have memory and recognition ability. If they were wild, they would flee from a big creature such as a human, but they recognize that I mean food, and become especially excited when they see the red food container.
So if fish can recognize things, then surely we can't rule out that snakes can too? I know I overuse the "they recognize the feeding tongs" thing, but it does show some type of memory recall and recognition ability, no matter how primitive.
Anyways, I'm rambling. I could talk about this stuff forever.
^^
i feed all my snakes in a tub that i clean out even if i clean with bleach and all that the moment my snakes go into the tub they go strait into feed mode tell they are done then i use the lid to block their heads so they cant bite me and pet them and after that they calm down and i can put them away without being bit.

My snake is a lap girl. She likes her head rubbed and she is spoiled. How do I know well I don't need ro methodically analyze my relationship with my scaly buddy but it is there. This was an animal I did not want but she and I have a bond I know it--- she pulls back from others for me to hold her. She can be hot as a firecracker when I get her out but she always gives me little squeeze hugs.maybe it isn't the snake who has problems bonding maybe its the owner!!! My girl isn't a dog but she isn't a thing either. She feels heat and has feeling why wouldn't she enjoy a warm cuddle??? I say your buddy loves you in her own way--- it is an animal --- I'm not a "Des Carteist"... He believed no animals had feelings!!

Putting people on ignore is a bad idea. Then they make fun of you and you only read everyones responses to it. You still know what they said in a round about way.

Or
Grin and bare it

Let's set it straight. You left because you couldn't take the backlash from defending stupid decisions your what-ever-she-is-to-you made. Regardless if you knew they were stupid or not
You talk about people looking at who the source of the comment is when trying to decide whether to take it as good information or garbage.
