Just got him recently. Hes roughly 2lbs and approx. 3ft. He's 2yrs

I thought he was quite attractive for a normal. Very healthy. Super friendly. Ill admit I am sort of nervous to handle him. Tonight's his first feed with us. So I'll start swallowing my nervousness in three days lol. Start handling him.

Anyways just want to put him out there ha. His name is "Stitch"

I'm new. Hope pics worked.

My apologies for they are not vertical hah.

Royals tend to be really calm snakes, very rarely bite... More prone to crapping themselves and rolling into a ball, hence the nickname. :) goodluck

He is very good looking :) Be gentle and confident in your movements and handling will go well. Best of luck with the feeding and the handling a few days later. Let us know how it goes :)

Out of all of my daughters snakes, the ball pythons are my favorite. Don't get me wrong but I love all of them but the balls are really fun.

I've been bitten by black rat snakes, garter snakes, something I'm still not sure what it was to this day, but no fangs. LOL. I've yet to be bitten by our ball pythons. (knock on wood).

As has been said above, they're really laid back and friendly. Ours actually prefer the company of people rather than being left alone. We walk in the room and all three of them will usually come out to greet us and wait to come out to be handled.

Truth be told, I fear our 17 inch garter snake over all of our other snakes. She's a wild caught rescue. She was injured when we caught her and she's got some kind of attitude. She's settled down and has become a wonderful pet. I have to help her with her shed sometimes due to her injury.

Our two little ball pythons are 24 and 27 inches long. Our big one is 48 to 50 inches long.

Here he is with our daughter...

That's adorable!
How old is she? My eldest is 4.5 (yrs) and we got him for her mainly. Well myself too, i LOVE pythons. Especially the royals/balls (whatever lol).

I am terrified of being bitten and you know the thing is., I maybe just need to. I have "cage anxiety". It's fine holding him, and interacting with him. It's the crucial first 30 seconds when i stick my hand in his enclosure. I have a mini meltdown inside. ha. I usually stick my hand in two/three times, and stroke him before i attempt to, move/handle him. He didn't eat tonight for us, which I sort of anticipated. However i sought the opportunity to handle him a little bit instead. We've had him for 5 days now. I felt it was okay, he's super curious about me. If i approach his enclosure, he's right there looking at me.

It's so hard to read them, as their facial expression never changes.
Once i get to know him better, then i will be more comfortable. I also think the fact that he's rehomed. Freaks me out. I have no idea how frequently/little they handled him so i'm constantly fighting some silly inside battle that he's a monster and will eat me any chance he has. hah Obviously he will not. For hardly knowing me he tolerates me VERY well. Has never "balled" nor hissed or attempted to strike...at anything hah.

I really like him though. I've waited a long time for one, so i am going to make the best of it lol

I've been bitten by cats, dogs, birds, spiders, lizards, all of which hurt more than snake bites. Maybe if you think of it that way it will help? Anyway, a BP is unlikely to bite you. Just handle him gently and make sure you're feeding him properly so you don't get a feeding response.

By the way, nice looking BP. Hope you are able to get over your 'cage anxiety' ;)

How old is he?

I'd refrain from any holding or touching until he takes at least a single meal. Sounds a lot like you're in there often to touch or hold him. It can stop him from eating. If it's an adult, it could be due to the time of year.

Also, if you're anxious then buy a small snake hook. It's an easy way to get him out and into your hand without you being anxious.

You'll get over the uneasy feeling of being bitten, especially if you do get bit which will freak you out. Just pick the snake up with confidence and I'm sure you'll be fine.

You're more than likely correct. Actually i know you are hah.

I have refrained from handling him. Exception, this evening..
I only 'touch' him when i'm changing his water, or maintaining his enclosure. I don't walk by and stroke him every time haha.

Do i try and feed him again tomorrow, or wait another 7 days.. ?
He's 2yrs. Btw.

Wait 5 days. It's about consistency. He's healthy. I'd have no worries about him eating or not for at least another year.

haha, Thank you! Me too.
In time. I have absolutely no doubts.

I as well have been bitten by many a different animal. Never a snake, i don't want to ...Wahhh  lol. If it happens it happens.

Snake bites aren't bad unless it's from something big or something with large teeth like an emerald tree boa.

When I was bitten by a green anaconda which is way worse then a BP it actually stung for like 10 minutes, first time I've ever felt something like that.

It doesn't totally suck...

I own a lot and I don't get bit. People with far less than me get bit more frequently. I generally use a snake hook before my hand goes near them.

Ok.

So, i have another question. haha..
His previous owners fed him live. I personally am uncomfortable with this, only because i effing hate rodents. I want to switch him to F/T.

Since tonight was his first trial feed run. We have a live rat, now.. What the bleep do i do with it? haha... Can i kill it and freeze it?? Or....

Hit it over the head or dislocate it's neck with a paint scraper then freeze it.

Yes. Humanely kill it though. There's a video somewhere on here where someone showed a quick and easy way to do it humanely.

To switch him to f/t you may have to feed him live first. Personally, I'd only try F/T at this point because, well he's healthy looking and he can starve until he does.

PM me if you have more questions.

Okay. See i thought that too, about feeding live before switching. So i got a lie rodent to start that process. I didn't bank on him eating tonight, but i did hope he would. I should have maybe just bought a frozen one? Then i wasn't sure if he'd take it at all.. *sigh*. haha..

I'll just...humanely kill the damn thing and freeze it. *shiver*

Thank you. I will !

That's what i read, except with a ruler not a paint scraper. I think i'll have to use one though, because i don't have a ruler lol.

Anything that can dislocate the neck will work. I personally went with cranial destruction the first time I prekilled because I didn't want to risk messing up with dislocating the neck. It was NASTY with blood pouring out of the mouth though... I didn't even hit it over the head that hard.

My daughter is 7 the snake is 5. LOL

that snake she's holding is a rescue. He has every right to be mean and hateful but that just isn't the nature of these guys.

Let me share a couple of videos I made trying to document the recovery of Flash...
Removing a Retained Eye Cap on a Snake - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zd-0WS4ufys)

and...

Caring for a Sick Python - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ex3QsIVHyMs)

As you can see in those videos, Flash has every chance, every reason to sink his teeth in to John, my friend, and myself. Unless you get a really abused snake that fears people, the chances of you getting a biter are very, very, very slim.

Oh yuck. We ended up just keeping it alive. If he takes this one in a couple days ill be trying to switch him his next feeding. I can't kill animals no matter what, so I think f/t is in my best interest, so I dont run into thjs problem again.. ha:hmm:

He's under the daily care of the kidlet. She's taking great care of him and she really loves all her snakes.

I wanted to curb stomp his previous owner. But, like you say, he's a good boy. He's really coming around and I'll post another video in a week or so.

If you look at user michaels226 on youtube, I've got a couple more videos of feeding the snakes.
