View Full Version : why so much arguing?
I just joined this forum and am amazed at how many threads have people arguing, calling names and putting each other down. Really? Is this the way it always is here? I came here to learn about snakes but I really don't like sifting through all the rude disagreeing that goes on. Can't we all just be nice? :(

No theree ISN'T!!!! ;)
There is no dorum on the net without some arguments. The difference here is taht USUALLY there are disagreements that dont result to petty name calling and pathetic insults, and when these do occur then bans occur and the rubbish is deleted :)

I've noticed that happens in ALL the reptile sites. I've bailed on a couple reptile sites before this one for that very reason. This one is more friendly, so far. People appreciate others vast knowledge, but sometimes some become arrogant and conceited. That happens in ALL things online. Yeah, the interweb is destroying human interaction, if you ask me...:hmm:

Don't confuse discussion with arguing. We can discuss oposing views and say what we want and most of us remain civil at the end of the day. A few threads can get heated but thats the internet for you. If oposing views were not discussed most of the things we know about snake care would still be secret to novice keepers.

I have to say that I agree. That is why I haven't posted on here in a long time. I know I am a novice but when you ask for information and get scoldings and snide remarks instead it really puts you off...

It seems to come in waves. It's actually not been so bad this last month or so.
When I first joined I noticed it big time. Then I left a while and posted again about 5 weeks ago and got another little burst of attitude, but then it dissipated.
I think it's all down to a few things.
1. How well people know you, ie. how often you post and how you treat others directly affects how people treat you.
2. How much you are "respected" (I am sad to say) some people get the red carpet and some don't.
3. How ridiculous other people deem your questions or answers to be.
But otherwise it's not too bad. Me personally, I try not to judge. The mods are doing their best to keep on top of it all.
I'd just not worry about it too much mate. You can always choose to ignore the responses you don't like and only listen to the people that are respectful :)
You can also report people who are consistently rude.

Lol! Ive noticed all the arguing too. You see it on almost every forum though. I find it really hilarious when things escalate sometimes, i just try and stay out of it. they do ruin threads sometimes, with 4 pages of unnecessary conflict.

I'm part of other reptile forums, and I don't know if it's just the people in the Monitor Lizard and Other Lizard area, but I see a lot of fighting on here.
I think that so much of it is just people being plain RUDE. An of course everyone has their own version of what is 'rude'. But petty things like name-calling etc is obvious to me.
I saw a thread the other day where someone was needing some advice and their snake's life was on the line and instead of helping, people jumped all over them. Started calling the person names like 'fail keeper' etc. That's the kind of stuff that pushes people away.
That being said, I have also had about 5 individuals on here who have helped me so much and have put hours of their time into helping me. I'm so grateful for that, I just wish that people could focus on the animals and not their own petty arguments or grudges.

I don't see it - I'm not being argumentative here, I just don't see where the arguments are. It seems to be peaceful to me, maybe it's confined to certain parts of the forum that i don't visit?
Cab somebody PM me some threads where the arguments occur?
LOL.... I hope this thread doesn't turn into an argument!!!! I just thought I would share my first impression... guess I don't like that kind of stuff but it sounds like there are lots of nice folks here with knowledge to share. :)

Lol. Is it just me or is it always the new or low post count members who feel the need to point out how terrible we are for arguing and being mean? Maybe we don't do enough for them? Let's start sending them milk and cookies and having story time! Maybe that will help them snuggle in?
Let explain how this forum works. There is a lot of history and inside jokes. Some people have nicknames like DC while others are called Ace and Gary. Just because you don't understand it or appreciate it doesn't mean anyone needs to start a thread. If I call Aaron the great knob gobbler that's okay because he is. Some people on here have consistently given terrible advice or are pathological liars, these people get treated how they deserve. Most posts people get upset about are because someone spoke the truth but didn't put any syrup on top. So that's just how we roll.

no but you dont have to be a pretentious dee-eye-sea-kay either. There is a lot of smugness and ego trips that goes into answering new folks as if everyone is holier than thou and you never had a "dumb" question to ask. It shouldnt be a labor to be kind to your neighbor, or new folks in this instance.

I find this rather rude. People like myself come here looking for help and a friendly environment, and then there's someone saying that because they have more posts, they are therefore better. And it's not just you, I have seen this several times, and it is getting on my nerves. I don't think the person who has 1,000 posts should always be seen as more knowledgable than the person with 10.

Gotta say that I didn't read this whole thread because I was too lazy but it really doesn't bother me and I don't know why it bothers some people so much. I mean it's the Internet and you don't even know the person who cares if they were "calling you names" or whatever. I try not to be rude to people but when some people do it you just got to ignore it and take the good out of it. I got to admit to that it hasn't happened to me that much as right from the beginning I did lots of research so I didn't have to ask to many stupid questions. I still did get some "attitude" but I don't care. You also have to know people. An example that I am thinking of just off the top of my head is Mykee. When your new you might think e is being rude but he really isn't he is just blunt and strait to the point. Well anyway that is my point of view.

Isn't one of the main purposes of this forum to ask questions and learn? You're operating under the assumption that all questions asked are in the snake's best interest and the person is only looking to do what's best for the snake - which just isn't the case. Well-intentioned, reasonable questions should (and usually are) met with honest answers. There is, however, such a thing as a stupid question.

See that every day, on many forums.
It is unsettling when some people insist on continuing practices that we know is going to make their animals suffer because they refuse to listen to a little common sense.
that's usually when the unpleasant statements roll out.
