So today I went to the store to get a rabbit for my big retic and I asked them to kill it for me. When I got home and opened the bag they put it in, to my surprise, it was still alive but it couldn't move except for blinking and, just my luck, my snake decided he didn't want to eat today, he was in shed but he usually still eats, so I didn't know what to do with the rabbit because I don't wanna freeze it while its still alive. I put it in a container and to my surprise again, it suddenly lifted its head up and looked around then laid back down so I decided I'd give it the day and maybe it'll regain control of everything else. Well I just got home and its still just lying there. Alive and pooing. What should I do? I have no problem killing rats but for some reason, rabbits are just too hard to kill for me. They don't look weird or bite or smell like rats so they're harder.

Just snap the poor things neck.. Your leaving it there to suffer just because you think it's "cute".... Rabbits do smell and bite, but we are brought up to consider these as "pets" so it will pull your heart strings more..

^this.. end its suffering. It's cruel to leave it in hopes it might regain some control. You have no idea how much pain it's in.

You would be doing it a favor by killing it. The poor rabbit is suffering, unable to move.

Totally agree with all the above, snap its neck like you would a chicken and stop it suffering.

They do it like they just said snap the neck there is no nice way of doing it.why don't you buy them pre killed and just make sure they have killed it before you leave.

One firm hand hold across its shoulders and one firm hand hold at the back of the skull. Pull both hands apart qucikly whilst twisting at the same time. You,should feel a "pop" and the rabbit go limp :)

Thanks guys. I don't know how I missed your thread dinosaurdammit but I'm glad you showed me.
Lankyrob, thank you. I guess I did it wrong cuz I snapped its neck the way you guys explained and I heard the pop but for some reason it didn't die. It was still breathing and moving its eyes around and I felt so bad so I just smacked its head against the table to knock it out then put it in the freezer immediately. Ill make sure to twist its neck as I do it if it happens again.
Is it normally harder when the rabbits are larger because I had to put a lot of force and muscle into it to hear the pop and it was a pretty descent sized rabbit, around 7lbs

Sounds like you broke the boness but not the spinal cord :( bummer when that happens which is why i used to carry a knife when checking snares as a kid.

I always do. This time I just assumed it was dead because he came back with the rabbit limo and just put it in a bag.
Since it was completely limo when he came out, how do you think the rabbit was able to lift its head but not move anything else?

i kill rabbits by,holding them upside down by the back legs, then hit in a downward motion, where the neck joins the head with the edge of my hand...
like a karate chop
this breaks the neck and severes the spine all in one go

I breed my own rabbits [Calis]for my snakes.Produced 300 or 400 last year easy.
Easiest way to do it Imo is grab both hind legs firmly with one hand and hold behind the head firmly in a cup shape at the base of the neck and with a quick/sharp pull in both directions and it is done.
