For this entry, we are profiling Onyx, the fifth of our six adult breeder females. Onyx was born in May 2008. We named her, as with all Living Gems females, after a semiprecious gemstone.

Here is Onyx as of October 2008, just after she arrived at Living Gems. Note the photo quality is poor, dark and somewhat blurry. I’ve learned a lot since then about snake photography.

Here is Onyx as of May 2012, on the occasion of her fourth birthday:

Onyx is the “odd girl out” this breeding season -- we have six females, but only five breeder males -- and has been placed with the Scarface-Almandine pair…much to Scarface’s delight, and Almandine’s annoyance. Scarface actually joined Onyx in their private condo’s hot tub as recently as last weekend…so here’s to hoping for a litter of little gems!

Hey Cliff, beautiful animal as always!!

You will find that breeding in trio's usually works very well. I've done it dozens of times with mostly good results. I have also done 1.3 and 1.4 with mixed results. Seems 1.1 and 1.2 are the best ratios.

Good luck with them!!!

Thank you, Dave! Thankfully, I have no plans to breed above the 1.2 level.
