Hi all,

Recently my Savannah Monitor past away =( and I now have a new Savannah which I have recently got. However after coming back to my empty vivarium I noticed that this white fluffy substance had grown in the top soil/play sand substrate. It had grown in the left end of the vivarium where the basking light was, on the middle and right end (cold spot) of the vivarium none of this was present. What is it? and should I be concerned to put my new Savannah in there just until the morning until I purchase some new top soil and play sand.

It looks like mold. It usually grows on feces that is left for to long. But the bio-active substrate should have broken it down unless all the bugs in your substrate died some how.

A harmless mold/fungus... when your Bosc stopped churning the dirt, new life began.

Don't worry, Once the new guy starts stomping around in there, the dirt won't have much of anything growing that you will see.

Also, your lights have probably been off right? So the enclosure has likely been colder and wetter than normal.

Airing it out for a day or two will probably take care of the mold. :)

At the time I actually already had Mr Rex so I wouldn't have been able to air it out for a day or two. but on a positive note I removed the visible stuff and all seems to be well again now =]
