I'm a big fan of the vBulletin "thanks" system. Just a simple "Thanked for this post" system that's included in the basic package I believe.
Any reason why this wasn't implemented?

Please don't do a thanks syste. Do karma or rep points but the thank system is terrible. At least where I've seen it used.

I agree. I see it simply as a way to show basic gratitude for good advice or interesting/helpful posts.

But, a rep or karma system is better, I do agree with that.

I'm not familiar with a karma system. The rep system I'm familiar with is fun though. Sooooooooooo much inappropriate content. Loved it. :D

The other forum I'm on that uses it will have someone post" my iguana ate today" and some stupid twit will thank them for the post.
I like rep better than karma as I had a stupid twit get into a negative karma war with me because I called him out. He gave me negative karma for telling wayne I wish I had a sav but didn't have room right now.

The forum I'm on that has it doesn't have any issues like that.
People can do that stuff with the rep system too though if they get some friends involved. In reality, any system can be used improperly. The "Thanks" system is actually probably less likely to be abused in such a way that it has an obvious negative effect on someone. Not that I'm particularly partial to any of them. Doesn't make much of a difference to me.

Atleaat you don't see a message saying "stupidtwit says thanks for this post" because your snake pooped.
StudentoReptile

Personally, I'd prefer to have none of them. The "thanks' system just adds unnecessary posts and makes the page longer (more crap you scroll down through). All of them can easily be used improperly, people "buddying up' to give out kudos to each other when it often isn't really warranted.

You guys must know of a different Thanks system than I do. The one I'm familiar with, there aren't any messages when you get thanked, and all it does is add a little thing (maybe half an inch) at the bottom of the post saying who thanked for it. Not really any kind of hassle or irritation.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. ANother forum I know has it, and everyone and their brother thanks everyone else for every other post. Those "half inch" foot notes start piling up quick.

I guess if the forum is full of idiots, that might be an issue, but like I said, I don't think that would be a problem here.

Honestly, i like the this site the way it is, without any systems that may lead to abuse of said systems. You'd be amazed how many people get butt hurt over the amount of karma this person has, or why he or she was given negative karma.

All i have to say is if it not broke don't fix it. You want to thank someone send them a PM.

In the long run I don't think it will make a difference either way.
If it's added, fine, we'll see how it goes.
If it isn't, no big deal, the site stays the same.

What I do like about the "thanks" system is that it confirms that someone read your post, even if they don't reply to it.

It's built into the newer version of Vbulletin, so when we upgrade to VB4.x it will be there.

It's my favourite part. You can also remove your thanks from the forum I'm on.
I don't like rep/karma. Probably because I'd have none by end of first day.

I think the thanks system is a good idea, not the karma point thing though. Trolls end up abusing it and everyone gets negative points for no reason...

The only two places that use karma I know of have restrictions on the negative. One is you have to have so many post and the other you have to pay a subscription.

Oh ok, well then it'd be fine if people couldn't click the "negative" button.
