I absolutely can't stand it when an individual says that they had owned a snake in the past, but when you ask for any details they literally say they didn't know what "kind" of snake it was. This either leads to one of two things. Either they are lying, and have never owned a snake, or they did not do any research and have obviously kept the reptile in poor conditions (Linking to the common following "Oh, but it died").

I hear this often, and it kills me.

Happens with "lizards" too. Occasionally I'll have people try to talk to me about reptiles when they see my pics, and when I ask what they have, they tell me they don't know or say something that doesn't even exist. I immediately determine them to be an imbecile. Though, admittedly, I wasn't positive what kind of turtles the two babies I had were, but I at least had an idea of the few possible species and knew what care they needed, as the only possibilities all required very similar care (hence not being too concerned with an ID).

Happens with horses a lot too, actually (comes up the same way), though that doesn't really have any repercussions on care like it does with herps. Still, when people try to pull the, "I see you like horses. I love horses. I have a horse too" card, then I ask what kind and get, "Uh, a red one," I'm just like:

Delivered, but sadly my camera does her pinks no justice.

She's a Jon's Jungle line high-pink harly.

I dislike it with tortoises/turtles. People will tell me they own a turtle and when i ask what type they have no idea and it turns out its actually a tortoise.

Im also rehoming a few hatchlings soon and a few people that came to see them said stupid things - like that they'd owned a 'python' before, didn't know what kind so showed me a photo and it was a king snake. Someone else happily informed me that snakes only grow to the size of their tank and intended to keep his small by putting it in an 18 inch fish tank for the rest of its life (then duly informed me their lifespan was similar to that of a pet rat). needless to say these people will have to get researching before i consider them at all!

And dogs. I've asked people what kind of dog they have and they say "a black one".

I once had somebody telling me about their pretty white kitty, Princess. Princess had testicles.
