View Full Version : Home Grown Necropsy...**GRAPHIC PICTURES**
Squeemish look away! there are pictures of a snake being dissected. It's gross.
Okay then, I'm not done yet, but I needed a breather, as he does NOT smell nice. (think rotten eggs. add a noxious fart and you're about half there).
I haven't even gotten to his organs yet, but i'm pretty sure I found the cause of death. Take a look:

See what I mean? It's squishy and goes from the stomach down to the vent! And the closer to the vent I get, the worse it smells. Any Ideas? Figured I'd post this while breathing. hopefully I don't vomit.

I'm not trying to be an ***, but do you even know what normal organs look like? Without knowing it's going to be hard to find what abnormal is. Everything in there is going to be squishy and look bad to you if you've never seen it before...

What about the lumps? Did you look at them?

anything else I should get pictures of? Lungs look good, but they're hard to get a good picture of. Stomach was fine too.

why not just remove all the organs? that way you can look 360 around them. Pulling them out wont give you that good of a view

Not sure if you've seen this but it might help, I have some basic organs labeled with pictures....

Yeah, it was just the way the spine was curving after death from what I can tell.

I did see that. the only thing different I can see is the heart (and it was that color before I pulled it out...)
Not pulling everything out, as It stinks, and I've almost thrown up 3 times...I've never smelt anything that bad, even while working in respiratory care. Sorry it's not the pretties pictures, but I've never really done this before...

reptile fat is foul, although with it smelling as bad as it does could that maybe mean something?

I almost wonder, cause he was in the fridge, so decay should have been super slow. it stunk before I cut him open, and just got worse and worse. I've done cow hearts, pigs, stood through open heart surgery without even a second thought...this was rough...I wish you could send smells through the internet xD

^^ This.
Of course it doesn't smell pleasant, but it shouldn't smell THAT bad, especially if you've worked in RT. How old is it?

He died wednesday night, and has been in my fridge since then. Like...this smell was rotten eggs mixed with the worst fart smell you can imagine...

as sick as it sounds i love the smell of decaying things. Everything that dies smells different and its so unique. If he smells that bad maybe an abscess? They can smell down right like the pit of hell itself or in the very least the lou after lucifer gets done eating a mexican buffet. See if you can find any puss in there. Abscesses are kinda sorta easy to spot, most easy if you have seen it. If it were me i would sniff until i found the worst smelling spot and then dig around in there.
the worst smelling spot is right before his vent, but it's empty...
i even tried putting eucalyptus in my mask to help the smell, and it just permeates it

If you're looking for abscesses, wear goggles! Nothing like seeing people doing the matrix to avoid a puss stream flying across the room....
Smells can be very helpful. If it's been in the fridge since Wednesday it shouldn't smell like that, unless it's possible it was dead for hours before you found it.

have you checked his intestines fully? Just cut straight down and look on the walls there, if its right before his vent look real good in the muscles there. There is something wrong there but idk how to help you find it
No, cause my friends (who had him at the time) had him out, and that's when they got worried because of how lethargic he was.

another thing to check is his kidneys. check the tubes associated with them, maybe its kidney related
yeah, you can see the kidneys in the intestine pic. Imma go back out and see what I can find. I'll keep an eye out for abscesses, and put my goggles on!

when you open up the kidneys smell them and see if its worse or about the same and if its about the same then move on to the next thing because if it is coming from something you will know it. Found an abscess once in a horses mouth. It was most foul. If I remember correctly, reptiles when they abscess they dont usually get really liquidy stuff rather they get a more cottage cheese type pus. Either way dont get it in your mouth  its horrible
BAHAHAH! I'm wearing a mask during this for that reason xD and we just had to drain an abscess on one of our horses...it was one of her nipples that did it....so sad. but she's better now. =] alright...wish me luck and hopefully I don't vomit.

if you can try and cut a kidney to get a section to look at, here is a useful link I found

okay, kidney's are good. take a look at these pics though...his intestines are weird
They're pink and pretty up top, then they just go black, as seen...there was also a weird lump thing at the base of the stomach, right before the intestines. it's the little black ball. it was just filled with fluid.

the 'thing' next to the kidney (I know, thing isn't very descriptive...but i can't find what it would be...his stomach was big and pink, with this at the base)

also, my roommate, who can't smell ANYTHING, came out and nearly gagged before he even got to the table...just an idea of the smell...

So this was kind of a fruitless endeavour since you really have no idea what you're looking for?
Meh...pics were okay...I would have made a large space after your disclaimer before the first picture though. Most people can see the first one as soon as they open the thread.

You are braver than me for trying to get to the bottom of the death I couldn't bring myself to cut my snake open dead or alive. I hope you find an answer as it may help others good luck.

Hopefully nobody would do it while the snake was alive ;)

Actually me and a buddy just cut an abscess out of a snakes face.
As for the pictures I can say that after looking at hundreds of dead animal organs nothing looked amiss at all. As for the smell I know I froze Leah within an hour of death and when I thawed her out her guts smelled rank.

yes and no. i wanted to see if there was anything where he went 'lumpy' but there wasn't. Plus I learned about snake anatomy.....so not fruitless =P
i just have a question bout something, the snakes belly is pink like it was burned is that normal for a dead snake? never dealt with a dead snake my first snake is still alive and i made a habit of never killing snakes i caught in the wild but releasing them about where i found them even.
Yeah, it could be that...but when i measured his tank, it was only 90 on the heat pad. I don't think that light of a burn would kill him though =/
