well it took some patience but my carpet finally stopped biting.
i recently moved him into a new melamine enclosure and he started biting again.
is this to be expected? also he seems to be feeding better in his new enclosure.

Maybe if you just did it. Does he only bite while inside the new enclosure? Once out does he stop?

Snakes become stressed when introduced to a new enclosure.

Also I believe I've heard somewhere Melamine can be bad for snakes?

Undamaged melamine boarding is fine, its if the particles break apart that the damage can occur.

To the OP we got our JCP to stop striking after two years, moved him to a bigger viv and he started again, month later and he is ok again :)

What is he like outside the viv? With our we have found that 99% of bites are whilst getting him out, once he is out and had a chance to chill he is then perfectly handleable without gloves as longn as you dont wave your hands in front of his face :)

he bites just as much outside as he dies inside

He could just be stressed from being in a new enclosure. Does he have a hide or two that he can fit snugly in? He may just be uncomfortable in a new bigger cage. Like said above, time should help him settle down.

melamine vivariums are probally the most common type here in the uk,there are litterally millions of them mate

melamine dust is dangerous to humans if i remember correctly,as in if you saw it and breath in the dust

sounds like he's still in the proccess of calming down, that or he's always going to be a bit of a biter mate

imo only more handling and time will tell

cheers shaun

What issues does melamine cause? All my vivs are shop bought wooden/melamine vivs.

There are chemicals i the melamine boards, when the particle board is smashed/split then these are released and if inhaled COULD cause health issues BUT complete boards are absolutely fine (i have seven melamine vivs myself and am not concerned by anything i have read) :)
