I am getting a gtp in the next 3 weeks and i've looked up different ways of raising them and when i bring him home i have a 29 gallon tank to put him in until he finishes his color change but i was just wanting to know if anyone had any extra tips and some of what to expect i just want to make sure i got it all down before i bring him home
this is the little guy he just recently shed in the store

just wondering can anyone tell if he's a Aru, Biak, Sorong, Merauke, jaya ect.?

I started my baby off in a small tub 12" high by 6" deep and 6" wide placed inside an adult sized viv. I heated the adult viv and kept the humidity at 80%.

when he went through the colour change i then just removed the lid from the tub and left him to it :)

Best not to handle him at all, our guy is over two years old now and has been handled less than ten times.

Feed him rats straight away, no mice, they like larger prey (tho there is some talk sbout prolapses, mine was fedprey 3-4 times his girth from birth, i now feed 2-3 times girth)

thanks :) then once he hits adult hood what is the minimum viv size? and out of curiosity would a reptarium work for them?

Reptariums are all mesh from memory?? If so they wont work as they wont hold the humidity required.

Viv size for GTP's is a debatable subject, some will say theybarely move so dont give them too much space whereas i go for hte bigger is better theory (providing you can keep the husbandry requirements right :) ). Mine is now in a four foot long by two foot by two foot vivarium and i can assure you he uses all the space given to him. Ideally if i had the space and the money i would give him an extra foot of height to work in :)

Green tree pythons are very active, they move around after the light out, young gree tree pythons like digging afterdark and they also spend quite a bit of time ground. Lankyrob is right, the bigger the better for adult.

That is a great book but it is out of print in the states and the only copy I have seen for sale was selling for $600+

I doubt many people will be able to get their hands on that book anymore

Good Idea.. Grab it while you still can!

GTPs.. Don't free hand them at all until color change has occurred,Best way to handle them ever is removable perches and a hook. I have had mine for just under 2 yrs and I have only touched him once or twice. Get your temps and humidity spot on, give it as many perch options as you can so it can choose where it is most comfortable. I Feed weekly until a year old then opt for every other week. I feed prey the same size as the largest part of the snake for the first year then I feed prey 1.5 times the size of the largest part. Feeding to large of prey can result in issues sometimes.

If using a fish tank for your snake... cover at least 3 sides of the glass with something ( paper, paint, fabric) this allows the snake more security. Also if the tank has a screen top get some plexi glass to fit over it. You want to maintain your humidity without having to spray 10 times a day.

thanks for everyone's advise i really appreciate it he or she will be my first python or constrictor that i'll be taking care of by myself i normally keep king snakes, geckos, and bearded dragons

i have everything for him already but i have one more really important question for everyone i'll have him in a glass tank what is a good way to hang their vines or perches safely???????????????????????????????????????????? ????

I made a tank for a friend back a few years. I took plastic plumbing pipe flanges and glued them to the sides of the tank with aquarium sealant. Once dried I used those flanges to hold my branches in. The same Idea as hanging a closet rod.. You can then hang the vines off the perches.

Just make sure you air it out well and let the aquarium sealant cure a few days prior to putting your snake in. I like to fully heat the tank for 2 days and let it off gas before putting a snake in it.
