I was given some plans at another site and I found a local wood worker that has done some really nice dog houses, bird houses and other stuff. This would be his second reptile cage and I'm sure it won't be his last.

He estimated the price for the 4x2x2 at $200 for labor and materials.

These are the plans he's using, but it's going to be 100% redwood instead of plywood

Why start another thread on this? Why not put in the enclosure thread you started yesterday?

Good call on a wooden viv. Is he sealing it and everything?

Yep, everything will be stained and sealed.

Well that's not too bad of a price. You should see if he can trim it out a bit. Are the doors sliding or swinging?

That seems like a pretty good price for that size made out of real wood and sealed etc. Over here for a custom 4x2x2 viv out of melamine you will be looking at about £90 ($145) and if you had a real wood one made I am sure it would cost a hell of a lot more, especially if it was garnished and sealed.

We've been talking out details and he can do swinging or sliding. He said 200 is the cheapest he'd be able to go for the quality.

I prefer sliding myself. It has some draw backs when it comes to access. But swinging are more cumbersome IMO.

I've heard of swinging being bad for certain snakes that are more active and will try to dart out of every corner.

over here we have removable sliding doors Kevin.....

the top runner for the glass is deeper inside than the bottom runner

there's enough room in the top runner,to push the glass upwards, allowing the bottom of the glass,to pass out past the bottom runner, this is how you put the sliding doors in as well

its makes it easy for cleaning, etc

cheers shaun

Yeah well unfortunately I salvaged the racks for my vivs and I didn't think that far ahead. :/

I actually have to unscrews my top track and remove it to get doors our...... I always assume people have setups like me.

I will always prefer sliding. My burm is in a cage with a drop down door, and I hate it. I can't open up only part of the cage if I want, and I have to be really careful not to pinch his tail. Not to mention it won't close if any substrate gets in the door.

With a sliding door its easy to refill watere bowls even on feeding days ;) just slide a little and poor ratherthan having an angry hungry retic trying to bite you in the face :)

I agree that sliding is better. It is also extremely simple to make the doors removable.
