Hello all! First time poster and first time snake owner here. Today I picked up my new pet corn snake from PetSmart. His name is Sagan and I was told he is an Anerythristic black corn snake.

I have not weighed him yet but he is around 5 months old and 15 inches long.

I created a couple temporary hiding places for him until I can get branches and another stone house but he loves cardboard tubes partially buried.

My temperatures for the terrarium are fine but my humidity is only at ~20% so does anyone have any tips for rising it to what is necessary?

I tried to post an image of him but it said post denied.

And you have to have a certain number of posts before you can post pics.

It's a 20 gallon tank with a mesh top designed for snakes. I hadn't thought about putting plastic on the top, I guess just don't stick it directly under the lamps but cover most everything else?

I have aspen shavings which I hear soak up humidity. I'm going to try also putting some moss in a little dish on the warm side to help too.

When I had my gecko that needed 50-60% humidity in a 10 gallon with screen top, I actually put tape over the screen that didn't have the light on it. Now I have some geckos in an Exo Terra with a screen top and have a damp cloth on top. Some people are hesitant about tape, so you can use plastic wrap or a damp cloth or whatever. How much you cover depends on how well it works. You'll probably need to try a few ways til you find exactly what works without making it too humid or letting it dry too much.

Its a cornsnake native to most of the US, the humidity shouldnt be a major issue :)

IF it has trouble with shedding then offer a hide stuffed with damp sphagnum moss and you should be fine from there :)

Went out and bought a humidifier for my room, hopefully that will help Sagan out and help me stop getting bloody noses from this cold weather.

From memory their natural range is pretty much everywhere in the Eastern US, cant believe that the humidity is always high everywhere? Like i said before offering a humid hide gives the snake an extra option :)

I find a piece of wood works best. Just cut it to the size of the top of your tank and use the same metal clips to secure it as you would your screen lid. If you get an under the tank heater to replace that light bulb, this will also help with your humidity issues.

I dont understand how it could only be 20% unless you are using one of those petsmart gauges, I live in tucson and inside my house is above 40% humidity without help from a humidifier in the middle of summer.

Heaters generally dehydrate the air quite severely.

Like i said before offering a humid hide gives the snake an extra option :)I never said anything about making the humidity "high," but 20% is pretty severely low and a level not present in most areas of the US. Raising it to even 40% would be better than 20%.
