Might you be more inclined to purchase from a breeder whose animals are cared for using "green energy?"
I want to heat my snake house with water heated and transferred using solar power, maybe wind energy, etc.?
Thoughts?
(Yes, obviously the animals are top-of-the-line, healthy, etc.)

Honestly I couldn't care less Roy. Besides most use low wattage heat tape .

I am going that direction myself, but mostly because I hate the utility companies.

Personally if all other factors were identical i would go for the "green" one but apart from that i would go for the snake i like best ;)

Honestly It has never crossed my mind. Your question reminded me of that commercial where that guy asks, "Does your cauliflower have a large carbon footprint?"

It's pretty good already in our industry so I don't see how it will continue to change so much.
As stated, I use a low watt heat tape with a thermostat to keep all power costs down.

I don't know what I'm doing differently... Our electric bill is $350-400/mo. Most snakes are in tubs on heat tape on a thermostat .. in o e 80° room. There's an oil space heater in the room, but it's not on much at all.

With seven vivs in our living room that isnt temperature comtrolled our bill for the whole household is £70/month for a three bedroom house (with a daughter who leaves lights on constantly ;))

Marcy is by far the worst offender of leaving lights on in the house! Does that have anything to do with it? :-\
Lankyrob

It obviously doesnt help but there are lots of considerations - size of house, how well imsulated, number of vivs, number of people, amount of stuff left on standby etc etc etc ;)

Yeah, we plan to downsizing really soon, which gave me the idea.
OK, so, for this scenario, there are 2 snakes available, same price, both triple-gene whatever you like, same price.. Would you take the one from the new guy that uses "green" energy, or the guy you you've seen ant the last couple expos?

The guy that I already know from the expo (if I can trust him)..

For me it depends on the old timers reputation. If its good I would go with the know. If its mediocre I would debate. Anything less and I will try something new.

With prior "realtionship" that would lean me towards them.
Without the prior "relationship" i would go green ;)

Building a good reputation takes time, energy and patience. Getting a bad reputation takes seconds ;)

Very well put, Rob.
I've been trying to build that trust all along. Hopefully I'm on the right track with that.

A good reputation also takes a bit of projection. You need to be able to make them think you're successful. Trust me on that.

Going on this, regardless of being green or not, someone doesn't want to buy from someone who doesn't seem like they know what they are doing or have been doing for awhile. Confidence in everything.
If you want to go green and it's not too much trouble, go for it. I wouldn't use it as my main selling point to get across the consumer because ultimately, it's not producing a different animal.
Everyone is buying the person, not necessarily the animal. It's about trusting that if something happens then that person will be there for after care of down the line if hets don't prove or something.

Did you see a jump in your bill after adding snakes? Mine is only slightly lower than yours and I had to work to get it down there. My first bill after I moved into this house was 900 bucks, I almost threw up. I made a bunch of changes and now it stays around 3-350.

I would buy from a green breeder if the quality of their animals were on par with other breeders.

Yeah we've slowly seen it increase with each addition.
Thanks BB!

Along this same line, my wife had the idea to sell this product, a cleaner we have used for more things around the house than you can possibly imagine, trust me, and it's never let us down.
I can't find a list of the ingredients, but please, take a look and tell me if you would use this to maintain your reptiles.
Orange Magic | Natural and Environmentally Safe Cleaners! (http://orangemagic.net/)
Also, I think it's Kat who introduced us to Vermont Natural Sealer... Would you think of buying this from a reptile show, or online from a breeder (obviously at competitive prices)?

I don't need to click on the link to say no.
I personally use steam or a water/vinegar mix to clean anything. I add some elbow grease to everything and I'm golden.
Honestly, do you want to be a breeder or a goods dealer? Pick one. Work on it until it takes off. Don't spread yourself too thin.
Besides, if I saw a breeder hocking cleaners and sealers at the end of their table I'd walk away laughing. I've already done it to one. (He was selling bed linen though)

This^
If you decide to be a goods dealer, contact Vermont Naturals to see if they would work with you on selling and marketing it towards reptiles. ( if you haven't already) I bet they would be willing to work out a good deal.
As for the orange cleaner.. I wouldn't buy or use it.

Kat and Aaron.
Thanks much for your candid opinions! That really put things into perspective. I am just trying to think of other ways (other than mind-blowing boas) to distinguish myself from all the other breeders. My boas will undoubtedly speak for themselves. What I'm trying to come up with is that one little "twist" to make sure that even if you didn't buy an animal from me at the last show, you've been talking about my Booth long after it's ended.

Who cares if their talking about products? You want them talking about the wicked cool boas for good prices at the table!
Besides, you have to realize that it'll be a long road to distinguish yourself from others. Hard work and consistent boas and customer service will win hands down. The service will be remembered when you encounter your first problem and how you deal with it.
Nobody makes their money in the first couple seasons anymore. It's the long road that will lead to success.

You need to distinguish yourself from all the other breeders by having great healthy snakes at reasonable prices and be a man of your word. After a while your name will be out there as a great breeder. It is going to take time and a lot of hard work. Keep your hands clean and your head clear. Keep clean records and offer them up to those that buy a snake. ( shed, eating type records) Know your genetics and how the industry works.
You can do it, you will do it well. Just give it time. :)
