View Full Version : Snake too fat?

I'm really just wondering if my snake's too fat- that's all. She's four months old and out of all the snakes i've "snake sat" / taken care of- I have seen very few with an appetite like her's . . . she's quite greedy. Since she is four months old and not a hatchling anymore I only feed her between every 7-9 days. Not to mention if I go longer she get's sort of moody and goes into her hunting mode, searching the cage like crazy.
It's not like she's a small snake though, she's actually really long:) (finally). Anyways, I've got some pictures to help out though since words can only do so much. These are both recent (within the last 3 days). Hope I did this right, i'm still new :hmm:
One is with her outside peeping at the neighbors from behind a little brick wall and the second is her inside of her favorite hide. If you look closely though, at the one where she is in the hide you can kinda see fat rolls on her body lol. I zoomed in on that picture though to make it easier to spot.

Seems fine to me. Can we get a whole body shot and one kinda up close?

What snake is it is it a ball python? and what is she eating its fine to feed every 7 days but if your concerned you could try smaller meals but looks fine to me on that first picture.

OH! also, she weighs 230 grams at the moment and it's been 5 days since her last feeding

You should feed her every 5-7 days until she is a year old. Seven days would be best.

Okay, I found two more. That's what she feeds on and that is a rat pup, not a mouse. The other picture, was just her climbing my mother's random wall art. Both of them being recently taken within the last week

Ball Pythons are heavy bodied snakes.
A sign of a snake being over-weight would be if you can always see the space between their scales.
That snake looks fine..

Looks healthy to me too. Just stay to the weekly feeding schedule you are using. Beautiful genetic stripe btw.

Not fat at all.
Looks good to me. I feed my babies every 5 days until they reach six months old, then every seven for the rest of thier lives.

This is the most qualified answer.

And I will switch to feeding her every 5-7 days then. I know she's supposed to be a heavy bodied snake, but the only reason I even questioned if she over weight was because one of my cousins said she shouldn't have fat rolls. So . . . I was just kind of wondering, but thanks again for the help

When snakes coil up or force themselves into little spaces the "fat rolls" are just the skin compressing around a tight curve - the opposite side of the "roll" will be stretched tighter :)

Tell your cousin that they are WRONG and to read a book.
It's really difficult to make a growing snake fat.

If this uploaded correctly the first photo is her, not even a week ago (where shes curled up)
The next two are what she looks like now
and the last one is what she looks like in shed. idk why she is hugging syrup . . . she did that on her own Lol!

I wouldn't describe ball pythons as a heavy bodied snake... but yours looks healthy to me and better yet to Mykee...

It's a tiny bit chunkier than mine, but definitely looks healthy. I wouldn't worry. You can usually tell if they're too fat because either...
a) they have trouble climbing, or
b) you can see the scales separated and the flesh is visible underneath (due to bloat)
c) or both of the above
I didn't even mention this earlier, but you have one ball python and its a full genetic stripe? Cool. I have a few genetic stripes myself.

To quote Mykee (if I may):
"After visiting numerous pet stores and countless hours of research online, we agreed that ball pythons were the "perfect fit"; a stout, heavy-bodied snake that rarely exceeds 5 feet".
I'd say they were heavy bodied. I mean... compare them to a corn snake, or even a carpet python. Proportionate tot heir size, they are quite girthy.
That sounds vaguely familiar...

Yes, only one as of right now and she is full :). I'm going to get another one sometime this summer. Although, I can't decide between a sterling or gargoyle.

This can cause scale damage from what I looked up

That scale keeling is temporary.
