I've been in and out of the country a lot lately and I turn off basking lights when I'm away, so my pair of lace monitors have had a really patchy spring in terms of consistent heat and food. As a consequence, their mating season has started really late (almost three months late). I was just about to tell people there wouldn't be any babies next year when this started happening, yesterday:

Awesome! Can't wait to see more babies! Jarich, I'm pretty sure it's already been ruined many times over. Though monitor sex isn't really messy or anything.

Soooo... is that the only action that rug has seen?

I kid, that's awesome, congrats. Really hope we see some more of these in the US in the near future.

Very anthropomorphic cage you have there. A bookcase and everything!

Best of luck with the cop!

I'm curious, when you say you turned the lights off do you mean just complete shutoff? I'm assuming this is to cause them to go somewhat dormant and therefore cope better with the lack of food?

I turn off basking lights and mercury vapour lamps, but leave the ambient fluorescent lights on their usual timed schedule. Essentially, anything that provides a significant amount of heat is switched off so, as you surmised, they are okay with no food.
