Hi,

am new here and not even sure if in the right forum. Am actually not breeding snakes or keepin them as pets, but often see snakes in the bush and have problems idenifying them.

So I thought I micht put a picture every now and then here and see if someonne can help identifying a snake.

The attached pictures were taken in South-East Ghana. The snake was in a tree next to a river. It was small, maybe as thick as a thumb.

Thanks a lot.

I am sorry about that, I am not sure how many posts you have to make to see the pictures.

We just upgraded the forum software last night, I am sure the picture will show for you soon.

I can see them, others should too.

Welcome! As Wayne (infernalis) said, it would be VERY interesting to hear about your experience, if any, with wild monitor lizards. I am sure it would take many hours of sitting and watching, but if you had any experiences you could share about them it would be invaluable.

I would like to see some nature shots too, Like photos from the national parks, River Volta, the Savanna Plains....

Those photos would be very helpful to have available.

This is the most exciting thing Ive read in ages. Im about to explode with the amount of questions I have for you, but lets start with just a few.

Do you often see adult Boscs as compared to the younger ones?
If so, is there a difference in habitat/location/surroundings?

Boscs? not sure if you mean me. :-)

OH, you mean you have loads of pictures of the scenery that Wayne was looking for.

Awwww, I thought you meant loads of pictures of Bosc monitors. Not that the scenery pictures arent helpful, of course. ;)

Thank you, that would be so awesome.

sorry, scenery pictures.

we are actually in the bush / forest very often with different type of vegetation, often very dense and "original"

but we do not see many snakes, probably we move too noisily. seen some pythons, puff adders and mambas, but the one in the pics is a first. We often see however snake skins or sometimes find dead snakes. They look rather dead, have never really tested that. :-)

what about the attached? is that more like you are looking for?

Most welcome, will post more, but need to go through my pics first.

What about my snake? Anyone recognizes anything? Or is the picture not clear enough or lacking details?

The picture is distant, I looked up brown snakes in Ghana and came up with a couple possibilities.

Afronatrix anoscopus - African Brown Water snake.

or an African House snake (Lamprophis fuliginosus)

Thanks a lot, I know it is difficult to say anything from this picture alone. Regarding the location we were in, I would rather opt for the Brown Water snake. Makes sense somehow. :-)

Very interesting thread and shots. Cant wait to see more

Amazing to see some wild specimens of a common captive. Do you ever see any royal pythons? Haven't seen too many shots of those in the wild.

bushrat

yes, we have seen pythons, will check for pics, but to be honest, most of the time I keep quite a distance in between. :-)
