So I was at Petco today and saw, to my great surprise, they had a tank full of about 5 Rough Green snakes. I've wanted one of these for a while, and seeing it in unsuitable pet store conditions, I just couldn't help myself. They were also on sale for 12.99 which imo was a steal. Now i've read they are kind of hard to keep so I was just wondering if and how anyone on here has had success. I brought home 12 large crickets with me and by dropping in just 1 at a time I got the snake to eat four of them, so that's already a relief. It's in a 10 gallon right now until christmas when I am getting a new enclosure for my ball and the green will get the ball's old one. It's on moist eco earth with a water dish hide and lots of fake leaves. So anyway, does anyone know of a reliable care sheet or have experience of their own? Help much appreciated.

My experiences have been failures..

Treat them like a green anole or a small chameleon: UV lighting, naturalistic set-up with lots of foliage, misting, moderate/high humidity.

These snakes do NOT do well in the "typical" snake set-up: glass tank with aspen shavings, water bowl and a cave.

If you're lucky, you can get them to eat crickets, waxworms and hornworms.

I have him in a plastic enclosure now with the damp eco earth because I heard high humidity was the way to go. And thus far it has eaten a few crickets for me. How often should I feed crickets? I have a hide but also plenty of fake leaves/vines.

Get him a bigger tank, at least 20 gals. Feed him at least every couple days. These are not "once a week" snakes like most species.

Just to clarify, don't throw a half dozen crickets in there every 2 days without checking his progress. Check to see that it is eating. Again, give them some space to move around. They like to stretch out and "lounge" across the branches of shrubs and small trees. This is how you would normally find them in nature, not under a log or rock like most snakes.

Yea i've been dropping in two crickets at a time and making sure he eats them. He ate 3 yesterday and 2 today. I'm gonna give him a day now to digest. Really appreciate your help @studentoreptile
