Dont understand how these numbers work!

I feel really stupid asking this but how do You understand how many animals someone has?? In peoples signatures on here some of them have how many animals they have. They always have like 1.5 or something weird like that. I don't understand this?! How does someone have 1 and a half of an animal?? Lol I'm such a noob someone please explain this.

The first number is for how many males, the second is for how many females and the third (if its there) is qty of unknown sex
