There has been much discussion regarding the tone of the forum as of late; specifically regarding newbies not "respecting" (for lack of better phrasing) the more knowledgeable folks here, and likewise, some of the seasoned members not sugarcoating their advice and perhaps being a little rude with delivering their information.
I just came across this thread on another forum, and thought it was relevant. Please take the time to read:
What permits do I need and how do I ge them? - Tortoise Forum - Tortoise Husbandry Community (http://www.tortoiseforum.org/thread-58995-page-2.html#axzz2C32T6tTd)
Note the following:
The OP is only 13
A couple members there responded somewhat curtly, but not insulting.
No one got overly offended, or bit anyone else's head off or anything. The discussion was kept civil despite two different methods of offering advice were given
Here is one series of posts that stood out.
TB, you have the general right idea. Boah and Eric like to be very technical at times and I don't know if they realize your age. .......
Those guys are not offended, they are just pointing out a technical inaccuracy, and not sugar coating it for you. Don't worry about it. You've done nothing offensive.
Thank you Tom for clearing that up :) Yes, in case you guys didn't know I'm 13 :P
Like Tom said, definitely not offensive to me.
Age is not a handicap. :) It is one kind of advantage on the low end and another kind of advantage on the high end. I would feel shorted if people held this kind of information back from me when I was 13, so I offer you the same informational respect I would expect.
This was an exchange between a teenager and two men (among other members) that were grown adults, easily 10 yrs my senior. Regrettably, I do not see this level of maturity displayed online. Many people get flustered because someone simply offered advice that was not requested, and a lot of folks here are around the same age.
Anyway...that's all.

Do we really need another one of these threads? Seriously? Now y'all are just beating a dead horse. Leave the poor thing alone. Isn't being dead bad enough?

You're welcome to ignore the thread if it displeases you.
Honestly, its inevitable. If it wasn't me, it would be someone else in a week reviving this topic anyway. Go get ya some cheese to go with that wine.

Back to the topic, I just wanted to show a real example of a civilized exchanged between such a large gap in age and experience. It can happen.

You're new, you'll be seeing a few more.We should at least all get a complimentary bottle of whiskey with each one of these damn threads. It would make them worthwhile.

Ah, you're just barely legal to even drink the stuff. Let the older folks worry about monitoring their alcohol intake and you just worry about you. ;)

Ah, you're just barely legal to even drink the stuff. Let the older folks worry about monitoring their alcohol intake and you just worry about you. ;)Oh, but I take great pride in being a responsible person, so I could never provide anyone with such large quantities of whiskey. So I'm afraid this arrangement just can't work out.

The post count would be low, considering we'd all be suffering from alcohol poisoning.

While we're on the topic, I'd like an opinion. I'm going to the liquor store Friday, and I'm not sure what to get. The current options (disregarding price, as I don't recall prices) are: honey whiskey, SoCo, Jager, and rum. Thoughts?

I find the ignore button really helpful for clearing up threads. Now that this thread is cleared up for me, i can respond and say that i do agree that many people take things offensively when they shouldn't, and maybe some of us get protective.
It'll pass.

I recommend koolaid or milk as it is more on par with your maturity level.

AGREED. I hold my tongue as long as I can, but sometimes, the stupidity gets to me.
