View Full Version : Mar's GONE!~ :(
so yesterday after getting home from work i do what i always do,say hello to my 3 dogs give kisses and pet them. i go to my tanks and look at the temp and humidity making sure its right. and peek in the hides to make sure that my snakes are still doing fine. Roe does not seem to like his hide so hes always just hanging out so i always see him, Mar on the other hand is always in hiding, so i have a little flashlight that i use to see what hide he's in. when i got home he was no where to be found! :(
i am super upset that Mar is missing i dont know if he dead and my boyfriend removed him to keep me from being really upset :( or what but, i really have no clue how he even got out he has not been doing to well after his last feeding and was planing on taking to a vet. but have yet to find a vet near me(but still looking)
i have looked all over the house and found nothing but with the dogs in the house i am not sure i will ever find Mar. my house is not that big so all the place that i would go if i was the snake i looked...can anyone tell me where u would hide if u was my snake?
anywhere warm. refrigerator is a favorite, computers, heat vents. dark places, too

He may not be as far from his enclosure as you think.
Be THOROUGH, check everything. In everything, under everything, behind everything. Warm places are always a good bet.
You can also turn all the lights out, get prey scent in the room, and be quiet and listen for movement...
the refrigerator was the first place i looked moved it out removed the vent from the front. i have oil heating that i dont use but i have a big vent in the hallway that i keep a rug on top of i hope Mar didnt get down in that but im most sure he was a little to week to pick that rug up.
ibaman did u ever find your missing baby?

Start with the room you kept him in, and do a thorough, and i do mean thorough search of the room, the furniture in the room, any tight spaces where a snake could squeeze into or under. After eliminating that room, search the next room, and the next room, then the next room.......
Search the basement, if you have one, near the furnace, don't forget to search outside as well. It's a possibility he could have gotten outside.
Also, did you thoroughly check his enclosure? I mean, take everything out, and replace it checking?

Definitely triple check the enclosure, inside the lid (if it has one), thoroughly check the hides, sort throught all the substrate. There a re number of threads on here of people who "lost" their snake just to find it in the viv a day later :)

also use flour or something similar along the walls, when they move they tend to stick to the edges of the room and you can sometimes track movement by looking for trails in the flour.

Nothing against you but that's just a huge mess for something I have yet to hear works.
I have a question and it may have been answered but I skimmed, have you found out HOW the snake got out in the first place and fixed that issue?
if he got out how i think he did Aaron then yes i did fix it

Well at least this one is in a house.
He will be close to the enclosure. Check every inch within 15 ft of his viv.
I mean every inch. Under stuff on stuff they go in weird places.

They can also climb where you wouldn't believe!

possible, but as long as it's not going to harm the snake, it's worth trying almost anything to get one back!! Besides, nothing a broom and dustpan won't fix in the end!!

Also check in places that you believe your snake wouldn't fit... they can really squeeze into unbelievable spaces! And they can also climb. That being said, they can also travel if they've been out long enough. If he wasn't in an secured room, I'd say go ahead and check other rooms too. Keep us posted!
i just got done dumping all me and my boyfriends shoes out just making sure he wasnt in there still nothing i am kinda starting to worrie about how cold its going to get tonight... :( low 30's

Put out a heat pad (hooked to a thermostat) with a hide over it. Hopefully the warmth will draw him out. Was the room in which his enclosure is in secured? or would he have access to leave that room and go elsewhere?
his enclosure is in the living room... the larges room in the house... but i know hes not in here i have turned the room upside down....

Look under the furniture, I mean up in the bottom. They will sometime get in the springs if yours has them. I once had one get in the springs of a car seat took forever to get him out of there.
If there is a place he could put his head through look in there. It's amazing the places they will go.

I know this probably doesn't help much, but I've had snakes get out twice. The first time we found him all wrapped up and hiding in a decoration we had out and the second time my step dad woke up an he was curled up on his alarm clock where it was warm.

Maybe a kind of "Duh" type thing, but I thought my kingsnake had gotten out about a month ago and I had no idea how - his cage is locked shut. I took everything completely out of his cage, then tore the room apart.
I figured I'd get his cage ready for when/if I did find him and while putting it all back together, I went to re-moisten his humid hide - and he was curled up inside of it safe and sound, but was completely hidden so I couldn't see him from the outside. The humid hide had been sitting outside the cage on the floor for about 20-30 minutes and he luckily never came out - I almost inadvertently let him out!
So, like others have said - check and double check EVERYTHING.

the same thing happened with my bp oscar except he was under his water dish :p
Haven't had to try this myself but it looks like it should work.
If you Google 'How to make a bottle trap for a snake' you will find instructions on making a simple snake trap out of a 2-litre plastic bottle . Add pinkie, place on heat mat for best results, leave in room at night. Hungry snake can get in but not out.

Glad hes back - have you found out how he got out and fixed it? :)
Ya rob I found that there was a hole in the top of the tank lid from where the heat light got to hot and bent the end of the lide up as well. I moved mar to another tank and will be working on a new viv soon made from wood and plxie glass.

Real glad you found him! Careful with those pups around Mar..they can really hurt him. Now look into finding a more secure enclosure for Mar so he can stay in it where it is safe ;) :)
Thanks I'm working on building something better then use a glass thank
