So my rescue is doing great. Boid, the western shovel nose is happy as can be.
He loves his new habitat and is growing like a weed.
5 sheds since my last update. He/she is 6" long now and always full of food!
Few shots.

If he stayed that small you could wear him like a ring.

I looked them up online after becoming curious about this little guy. It seems they get from 11"-17" long. ^^ He will be itty bitty forever.

Few more shots. For some reason my camera doesn't pic it up, but between his black bands he's got little peach blotches.

So it seems these guys are hard to find? I looked around and didn't find any.

His is wild caught. He saved it from being eaten by a big ol' spider. If I'm not mistaken, this is his first experience with snakes of any kind.
He's looking good! I'm glad to hear he's doing so well under your care. That means you're doing it right :)
Keep up the good work!

Keep up the good work! From what little I found, it seemed like you have to have a license to harvest them or something? But I could be wrong.

Each state probably has different laws. I'm not sure on this exact species. I've never heard of it until he found it. Plus, I'm not exactly sure what he did would be considered harvesting. He saved it from a spider in his yard during a really bad rain storm.

When I was looking to see if there were any for sale, I saw someone say they had a license to harvest them. But I'm not entirely sure.
Not that I care if he broke the law. I was just curious. I think he should breed them and give everyone here complimentary babies. ;)

Arizona doesn't have any harvest laws so I'm OK!
Yep. Saved him from a camel spider. His primary diet is large crickets and meal worms.
I haven't yet found any WSN snakes foe sale. I've been actively searching for another in hopes of a breeding pair. He/she is amazingly tame and loves being held more then anything. Likes to try and burrow in my beard haha.

That would be awesome if you could find some and actually be successful in breeding them. :D

Also I haven't quite narrowed him/her down between a mericopa or la Paz county shovel nose. I'm like a mile from the border. I'll only know once he gets larger.
California does have laws regarding catching and breeding of this species, glad I don't live there haha.

Believe me I've been looking. Taking the rhino and my prerunner out a few times each week cruising river beds but still nothing. Mostly rattlers and kings.
I've heard and seen a lot of interest in this little guy and I would love to be able to provide these guys to herps interested in having a small, easy to care for snake!

I always feel bad at the idea of keeping them in enclosures with how long they are. Plus, I really don't have the heart to feed them mice or rats (as I have a beloved pet rat myself). So, in short, one of these guys would be perfect for me. :D

I agree. Frozen mice were an amazing invention.
I wouldn't have fed my bros cornys if I had to buy and feed live mice haha.

Why you gotta make me think of that hahaWe used to have a corn, and my dad always told me freezing was just falling asleep and never waking up. Then I got older and realised that the excruciating pain of frostbite was the initial stages of freezing to death, and I was like: DAFUQ? DX I'm just a wuss all around, but I don't mind feeding insects.

Noone with a shred of humanity freezes prey animals whilst they are alive - they are normally gassed/killed first and THEN frozen :)

Cool snake.
Super hard to find captive. Like years between specimens up for sale.
Also, it's sad that you interrupted nature's life cycle. You now may have killed that camel spider since you took, not saved, it's meal.

Yeah, that may have been the case, if there wasn't literally pounds of bugs blown in from the storm under our security light. But yeah you know best. :wacky:

Upset the local ecosystem some more.
I thought we were for conservation not predation of our local flora and fauna?
Still cool looking snake.

Quick question for you folks.
Its been a while but boid has been doing well until today.
Its been ridiculously cold here this year, I went to handle boid today and he is incredibly lethargic.
Slow motion if any at all. He does have adequate heat on half his cage but tends too stay on the cold side.
My question being, would this be a sign of hibernation perhaps?
He was eating veraciously for the past few weeks, at least one large cricket a day.
Hope there is nothing wrong with him!
He did have a small bit of shed clinging on, so I soaked him in warm water which seemed to make him move a bit more.
Any feedback is great.
As I said he's been doing very well, the only thing I can think of is the cold temps.

Little boid gave me quite the damn scare. No idea what his issue was but he's back to his normal self, thank god.
My mom died in a tragic single car accident November 21st. While going through some photos for her memorial I ran across a photo my step dad took of her with a "Cali king".
Turns out it was one of Boids parents.
Now I know its weird, but because of this photo I've grown an even more emotional attachment too the little guy. Gave me quite a scare today!
Are you seriously giving him crap for saving a snake from a spider? What's the matter Aaron, you bored? Not getting enough attention lately? ;)

Still a pretty cool coincidence though. :)Are you seriously giving him crap for saving a snake from a spider? What's the matter Aaron, you bored? It IS one of the parents. He/she lives in the roots of my neighbors tree. Too close to be a coincidence.
I'll post the photo later of my mom holding Boid's parents.
