So i went and got a live rat today to help "scent" the f/t rat...

however it was feeding day, and they all took a f/t no problem!! (even the 4 year old female who was fed ONLY live for 4 yrs)

so now i have a pet rat:)

Will be uploading pics of the little guy/girl really soon... also going to check and see guy or girl.

Aww glad to know you didn't need to rub the little guy/gal with dead rat! Trust me, its very easy to tell if you have a boy or girl!

I have a pet rat too. They're the coolest pets ever. I'm not a huge fan of little furry pets, but I adore my rat. :)

lol I actually got two pet rats last night, a girl I work with brought in 6 of them, so I took two. Both of them are super sweet, I love them ;) Make sure you share some pictures!

Wont your snakes always be hungry or in "feeding mode" if a rats always around??

As long as she keeps it in a separate room and washes her hands or uses a hand sanitizer she'll be fine. :)

My son used to have a couple of pet rats when he was young. IMO, they make better pets than mice, hamsters, gerbils, or other related rodents.

Enjoy your new pet!

I'm actually kind of jealous. I love rats but someone I live with is very allergic to them ):

They make amazing pets too bad their lives are so short.

2 years is the usual if fed and cared for the proper way.

I find it weird that people are so weirded out by them. They're amazing pets. They can learn their names, learn tricks and they enjoy human contact. When I had my two a long time ago, they used to get so excited when I came into the room. They would groom my hand when I put it in their cage.

I currently have guinea pigs and previsously also had hamsters in the same room as my snakes, there isnt an issue as far as i have experienced.

Obviously you want to wash your hands between interacting with the rodents and then handling a snake :)

Used to keep my live mice in the same room as my snakes and didn't notice any change in behavior.

When I was breeding rats they where in the same room as my snakes.. Nothing to worry about as long as your hands are clean.

Sounds good.. i was looking for cages all day and couldnt find anything really good...

could i build a cage out of plywood? or would/could he chew through it?

if not... then i will get a rabbit cage

if i can i will be building one soon with heat in it... since he is in my basement, it does get cold ( i know rats can handle cold) but just want to be safe.
