View Full Version : Ugh!!

My mother is the bane of my existence. She's decided that no, I can't have a snake. They're 'dangerous' and 'creepy'. This puts me back at least two years in my snake-search.
I'm still going to the expo, and just as soon as I get set-up in my own place (as soon as I set-up, not as soon as I move. I'm going to stabilize first) I'm going to get my snake.
She's said I can have a gecko -_- I may or may not take her up on that.
I guess I should utilize the time to gather knowledge and supplies and such. Though I'd prefer ideas on convincing her otherwise (hint hint ;) ;) nudge nudge) lol. Any ideas?

Get a legless lizard.

Take her up on the lizard offer. Research lizards as there are many out there that are good for beginners. You can actually use the lizard as a stepping stone to a snake. I've seen it happen.
Also, try educating her about what you learn about snakes. Sometimes, planting a seed and giving it a little water works much better. Try to get her to go to the expo with you! If you can, you've gained a little headway. If she's amicable enough, you may even get her to hold one. I find most people call them creepy and dangerous because they lack knowledge. Educating her about them can work wonders. Bonus if you can get her to go to the expo with you.
You have to remember, it's her house, therefore it's her rules. It's up to you to find a way to get her to change the rules. ;) But don't be headstrong with it. Gentle guidance works much better.
Good luck!

I don't really have an interest for smaller snakes.. I'd constantly worry about losing them, cause they move so fast.

Talk to her, find out EXACTLY what her issue is and then take time to educate her.
Would she come to the Expo? Maybe if she held a couple of snakes or at least saw you hold them she may come round :)

She's agreed to come to the expo!!! :D Told me to text her the date later and she'll mark it on her calendar xD
When I asked her exact problem, that's when words like 'creepy' 'dangerous' and 'why can't you be a normal girl??' popped up :P lol

So find a nice docile snake that is friendly and cute and let her hold it - problem solved :)

Haha, we'll see. She seems really set in her ways -_- I blame my stepdad. She was considering it, then he came down for a visit, now she's barely left any wiggle room for compromise!

tell her snakes make no noise,no smell, and only need feeding once per week at most, every 2 to 4 weeks as an adult (depending on species)
if you keep it in your room, then no one will even notice its presence

Also, they don't bark, shed fur, or need to be walked. :D
and if that fails......get a water monitor, tell her its "some species of asian gecko"....
(kidding....don't lie to your mom :) )

You could always look into getting a bearded dragon they are easy to keep imo. They do enjoy and thrive off the interaction of their humans!

They don't jump up on company when they come over, or need to be let out to potty or be litter box trained. :D
As far as an easy to care for and low maintenance animal, snakes are the easiest. They don't leave messes, except in their enclosure, no barking, no fur everywhere, you don't have to feed them everyday, you don't have to spend time with them everyday, they don't jump up on company, or hump them (lol), no making sure they're potty trained in some way.
The only things you HAVE to do with a snake is provide them a proper sized enclosure, provide heat and humidity (which is really easy) according to species, keep their enclosures clean (which again, depending upon what you use is easy), make sure they have fresh water and feed the young ones once a week (some species need to be fed every 4-5 days) and as adults, every 2 to 4 weeks. You don't HAVE to even give them attention because they don't need it nor really want it.
I'm really happy she said she'd go with you. That's a huge step! Who knows? Something may actually get her interest in them. Remember, education is the key to anyone even remotely accepting these often misunderstood animals.

My mother, bless her heart, was so terrified of snakes in general. Whenever I got my baby, Squiggles, I had let my mom hold her. Of course the snake was all over the place, but my mom thought she was simply adorable. Now she's not afraid of snakes at all! Lol. I can see why she would be afraid, but the snake you would be getting I'm assuming is just as harmless as my baby is.
Like others have said, just kind of warm her up to them slowly. :D The expo is a fantastic place to start! I hope it works out for you!

This reminds me of my own mother. She was scared to death of them but took them in for me when I asked her to when I was moving from one state to back home. After she watched me with them and seeing they're not evil, she began to take a liking to them and would often take them out for handling sessions, even take my burm outside for some sun. She would even feed them. When I couldn't keep them in my temporary place to live, she insisted on keeping them for me. She grew to love those animals. :)

Rogue that's exactly why my snake wound up at her house to begin with. ^^ She was anxious at first thinking she was big or would get big, but she really enjoyed having little Squiggles around before I headed to the other side of the U.S. :P
get a hog nose.. no one can resist that face

Bad idea as I doubt her mom wants a venomous snake in the house.

A venomous snake that isn't even capable of killing a mouse unless it swallows one alive...
