We came home today and as we walked past our rubbish bags our dog went crazy. Imoved one of the bags and found that a hedgehog had got caught in the loop of the tie top bin bag :( He had obviously struggled and it was wrapped all around him :(

I managed to cut the plastic and untangle him and we decided to bring him inside to release later tonight when it was dark

Turns out it looks like he has a bad/broken leg :( - so we are holding on to him until tomorrow when a rescue can take him to a vet and get him fixed up.

Because he is staying i moved him into our Deluxe suite :)

watch Rob....

those wee guys are usually riddled with lice

my dog had an allergic reaction after being bitten by hedge hog lice,it looked like someone had put 20 golf balls under her skin, she had lumps everywhere until she got a jag at the vets

nice rescue none the less mate:)

cheers shaun

Well done Rob :) Glad you could help rescue this little guy. Any idea how to heal that broken leg? will he be going to the vet?

the rescue has an agreement with a vet to treat for free, the vet will set and splint the leg and then "Prickles" (my daughter named him - OH NO!!) will go and live at the rescue until he is healed.

If he is heavy enough he wil be released this winter, if not they will house him until spring and then release him :)

That's an awesome rescue! Do you think since it seems to be fairly healthy and doesn't appear to have some nasty little creatures living on it that it could have been someone's pet that managed to escape? I don't know if they're legal in your country but here they're legal to keep in most places.

I do hope his leg isn't broken badly and he heals quickly!

There are extremely few people who keep them as pets but if someone had lost one the first place they would check would be the rescue so either way he will be fine.

We have his cage covered with a blanket to give him some security and have just heard chomping sounds, lifted the corner of the blanket and he is eating :) fingers crossed for a successful release once his leg is sorted :)

Well its two days later and the rescue have let us down AGAIN by not bothering to help us/help Mr Prickles SO....

I took him to the vets myself, they say that they think he has sprained rather than broken his leg and he has a small chest infection. It was -3c here last night so with a chest infection it was good he was in our house rather than outside!

They also said that he is one of the most well looked after rescues they have seen for a long time, we did everyhting right to the best of our abilities/resources. They are going to treat the infection and as he is a little light to be released this winter they willrehab him. Next spring they will contact us as they like to release where the animal is found so we should have a chance to see him again before he disappears into the wild.

Best thing is the vet is doing all this for FREE!!! :)
