My savannah monitor is often wet, and I've been wondering what exactly she's been doing in her pond. Well I caught the tail-end of her activities tonight! :)

She's intentionally swimming INTO the inlet from the sump/filter, basically swimming laps.

She's perfectly capable of climbing out, the current isn't strong throughout the pond, and she can stand in it with her head above water.

She'd been swimming like this for at least a minute before I thought to record her. :) ...then she noticed me and stopped.

I do have to wonder.. some people try and say that this is not natural... Yet my lizards both swim laps in their water, and Chomper was a very proficient swimmer back at the creek.

When I look at maps of the parts of Africa where Exanthematicus are found, there is rivers, ponds & lakes.

The Volta river basin's most valuable resource is it's water..

So why on earth would swimming be unnatural for a monitor lizard that lives where there are bodies of water???

It is such a beautiful and natural movement to watch them swim like that Wayne. That is one powerful rudder!

That's why I think the "they don't swim in the wild" myth is....

My opinion only: I think there is so much more to study yet, No disrespect intended to any biologists.

Certainly time and funding constraints prohibit staying for extended periods.

Is this a serious debate somewhere; that they don't swim in nature? I hadn't realized this was an issue. What an odd thing to contest.

Honestly, I think Mr. Arizona propagated that one.

Then of course the "disciples" spread it from there.

That's ridiculous. I had no idea when I posted this. Liam spends a considerable amount of time messing around in the pool. And here I thought she was going to use it only for pooping when I decided to put it in. I'm pretty positive she's very very gravid right now and the only activities she's interested in are swimming and napping... and eating rodents.

Has she been with a male? Or is she just producing eggs on her own?

When Chomper is swimming he looks just like my bearded dragon swimming. Except my dragon flys through the water.

Properly supported females of most species produce eggs independently of mating.

One thing we have to remember, within a half year of shooting that video, Chomper was dead. Therefore I highly doubt that Chomper was at "optimal operation" at the time, In fact, I think he was already quite sick.(especially after what I am witnessing now with Littlefoot and Cera)

I bet if either of the two here now were to jump into the creek, I would not be able to catch either of them. I put fish in the water bowl and Littlefoot will pluck them off with sniper accuracy, so I don't doubt their swimming abilities at all.
