View Full Version : Cricket Breeding

So I've decided to try my hand at a little cricket breeding, but I don't know much so bare with me. I have two tanks set up, and in the breeder tank, I have a dish with a few inches of moist peat moss. It's been in there for about 48 hours, and I noticed last night that there was some mold growing on the surface. So my questions are...

1) Do I need to worry about the mold? Will it harm the eggs or crickets? I removed it, but I'm sure it'll come back.
2) How do I keep this from happening?
3) When do I remove the container, and do I put the lid on it?

Thanks in advance for your help/constructive criticism. :)

crickets require very sanitary conditions as apposed to roaches. i attempted when i was young but failed as i didnt understand the daily upkeep required to keep them alive.

mold growing on cricket eggs will kill a lot of them

lol i was just about to say pinheads and eggs need very high humidity! to answer the original post, mold kills cricket eggs and small crickets. i forget whats being used in the nest containers nowadays as i do mostly roaches. just find an up to date website that breeds and provides good caresheets for them. a lot of people just buy crickets in bulk as overall its easier but not cheaper.

1)Yes mold will kill them.
2)Don't keep it so moist.
3)No clue what you mean.

and also having lots of ventilation will help with the mold

Try and contact some of the fishbait companies that raise them for resale. These folks raise them in the millions so they they should be able to help you.

i used to breed crickets....i used a ten gallon aquarium with a screen top so i was able to put a heat lamp...the crickets seemed to thrive better from the additional heat....it kept the top layer of the peat dry so no mold would grow and the under layer of peat would stay moist enough for the eggs to hatch...

Listen maggot. Some people have answered your first question and you keep saying that they aren't helping. You are being an askhole. Please try this amazing new thing called Google and go else where to troll.

lol lets make this simple.
1.mold=death.
2.DAILY upkeep
3.remove the container after eggs are laid. you can place the nest container in a separate enclosure. easier that way. assuming small scale breeding ie: not by the thousands..

I found some advice you gave in another thread and thought I would return the favor.

I'm sure you can find guides online about how to build a beardie enclosure.

I found some advice you gave in another thread and thought I would return the favor.I had already done that. That's how I got started. But there weren't many I could find regarding specific questions, so I figured it'd be easier to just ask on a forum.Listen maggot. Some people have answered your first question and you keep saying that they aren't helping. You are being an askhole. Please try this amazing new thing called Google and go else where to troll.I'm an askhole? Is that kind of like an ******* but with inquisitiveness? That sounds pretty sweet. =oi used to breed crickets....i used a ten gallon aquarium with a screen top so i was able to put a heat lamp...the crickets seemed to thrive better from the additional heat....it kept the top layer of the peat dry so no mold would grow and the under layer of peat would stay moist enough for the eggs to hatch...I had had a low watt heat bulb over the peat moss for the first day, but my kitten is a prick and knocked it over and broke it. Unfortunately, I don't have another. But if I pick up another one, that should eliminate the issue?

No, if you got another kitten that might knock over the lamp too. It wouldn't eliminate the issue...

mold grows in warm dark places. if you add light to the equation, you slow the growth of it down. this is why daily upkeep with crickets is so important and i admittedly failed 15 years ago when i tried it for my beardies. cricket breeding is a lot of work iv'e seen some guys out in the country who raise them for leos and beardies. spend just as much time taking care of them as they do their feeder mice for their snakes.

this is why roaches FTW lol at least for what i keep

I don't wanna get into it hardcore or anything. Just producing a single generation once in a while would be satisfactory for me. I don't need tons of them.

then you should be fine. just google for a cricket breeders caresheet.remember though even on a small scale, the upkeep may only take 2 or 3 minutes but it needs to be done daily. again i dont breed my own crickets but i know 2 guys who do and it is a lot of work on the scale they are doing it. good luck let us know how it goes!

Look into duboa roaches. They are soft bodied so the crunch will be minimal.

i love KORBIN makes me so happy when i read your post :D see the name and think hmmm time to get told off! :D ~HUGS~ KORBIN5895I made that post two days after someone posted a question that no one had answered, and since I couldn't answer either, I suggested she check the internet - instead of ignoring her like everyone else. I already stated in response to whatshisface's post that I checked cricket breeding caresheets but couldn't find any that answered my specific question.

You should probably know what you're talking about before you start kissing someone's butt. Otherwise you just look ignorant. :)Look into duboa roaches. They are soft bodied so the crunch will be minimal.Any crunch at all is too much. I'm not very squeamish, but crunchy bugs are my weakness.

How about YOU don't post anything unless you have first hand experience. Anyone can copy paste bad information.

That's korbin's point.

Also i was being sarcastic. I knew you meant mold. You were being annoying. You were already told crickets can't tolerate mold.

You realise this is several weeks old, right? I don't even remember what you're talking about.

Also, I love the irony of you reviving a thread just to complain immediately after posting in agreement on a different thread about people causing too much drama here. It's just...so delicious.

If you don't remember you can read it, it's right there.

And yes, you win, i came and looked up a thread of yours to point out how annoying you've been in the past. *shrug*

You're still annoying. I juts wanted to make sure you knew...since it's obvious to the rest of us. I just didn't want you thinking i thought it suddenly..i wanted you to realize it was from the beginning.

Many people feel justified by thinking that it's only one thread that points them out, and that people get riled up over one post. You should just know it wasn't just the one.

Yes she truly is. See we stick close here and welcome new members that want to learn. We want everyone to learn to be better keepers. Unfortunately people reach a saturation point where they are so full of themselves they can't see anything else.

i agree pal, this is the point i've been trying to make on here

if people don't have experience on a subject then don't post

i've seen too many reptiles killed and forums ruined by " google warriors "

posts may be several weeks or even years old.....

but if they contain good solid information, they can be learned from.....

posts containing bad info, just keeps the bad info out there, then people keep making the same bad mistakes

the age of a post has NO relevance, the information in the post does (if its correct info)

cheers shaun
