what kind of thermometer are we talking???
the correct way to do this is to have a digital thermometer with a probe, the probe goes directly on top of the "hottest spot" You will also need a thermostat with probe so that you can just program your ideal temps and the thermostat will turn the mat on/off as needed, the thermometer probe is there as back-up

Have you got a thermostat aswell mate? You want the probe directly under the ceramic..
Yea iv got a pulse stat but am really confussed where the probes for the stat goes amd the probe for the theremiter go? Ih i put the therm probe under my ceramic i would have to run it along the floor of the viv about 4 inches! Atm its on top of the aspen on the side of my viv but not directly under the ceremic.

problem with putting on top of the substrate is your not getting the hottest temp. that snake can dig under the substrate and still burn itself if youre measuring temps above that.
both thermostat probe and thermometer probe go in the same spot since on is backing up the other

The cereamic is a bulb so the top of the substrate is the hottest part not the bottom.
To the OP, put the probe under the bulb for both the thermostat and the thermometer, that is where you want the temps to read 90-91f.
I assume you have the bulb guarded so that the snake cant touch it?

ahh, sorry......brain not working at full capacity this week!!
Thanks for the info yea i have a guard so the snake cant wrap around it the guard gets hot tho is that normal?? Iv got both probes cabled tied together and on the hot spot its reading 91 is that ok? How long shall i leave the viv now befor i put the snake in as i have left him in his rub till i had sorted out where probes go and getting the temps rite its been reading 91 for about 6 hours now do i wait till tomorrow before putting him in? Thanks again :)
The guard shouldn't get that hot that it will burn you. Can you hold your hand on it? How much gap is there between your bulb and the guard?
There is quite a big gap all the way around it its the biggest gaurd i could find yea i can touch it for maybe 10-15 seconds before it starts to fill really hot!! have i done something wrong??

if it feels that hot to you, it could burn the snake. but I don't know how to fix the problem as my setups are completely different.
