My wife found this little guy in our laundry room today and at first sight she feared it was a baby Southern Pacific Rattlesnake which are around in my area. I put the snake in a bucket and let it go in a nearby canyon. The snake was around 16 to 18 inched long. I think it is a San Diego Golpher snake but not sure. Perhaps some of you experts may know.
Thanks

Yup, gopher snake, completely harmless. It's a cute little guy.

Yeah, looks like a little gopher. Thanks for not killing first and asking questions later!

Huge props for this, wish it happened more often.

Thanks guys for conformation. When my wife first sighted the little guy, only his head and maybe half his body was exposed. The rest of him was under some dirty laundry on the floor so she could not see if any rattles were on his tail. The first thing she did was remove our dog, which was sleeping a few feet outside of the laundry room door, as he is very curious and would have wanted to give the snake a good sniff if he sighted it.
She then yelled for me to come to the the laundry room as we had a snake in the house. The first thing she said was "Don't kill it". The snake's back half of his body was still covered with laundry so I could not I.D. if he was a rattlesnake or something else. Since there was a broom close by I lightly swept the laundry away to expose his tail. Once we determined he was not a rattlesnake we just gently brushed him into a plastic bucket and took the photo. Even if he was a baby rattler we would have released him back into the canyon. My wife and I don't like to kill anything unless there is no alternative.

When I first read the title of your thread, I thought perhaps your wife being in the laundry room was a rare occurance. :D
