Back around the beginning of the year my mom and I had to put down our bearded dragon Niko. It wasn't long after that when we decided to get another, but we ended up deciding we weren't ready for another so soon after his death, so I had gotten Aphrodite, my BRB, a few weeks later. We've both missed having a beardie, although I don't think we realized how much until yesterday.
Petco gets a lot of animals dropped off there by owners who no longer care to have whatever animal is in their care. Typically we get ferrets, guinea pigs, an occasional reptile or two. Well right as I was clocking out from my shift a coworker asked if I had seen the bearded dragon someone had dropped off an hour before (they all know I'm crazy about reptiles). I quickly went and examined him. He had a really small heat lamp, and felt cold even though he was sitting right under it. There wasn't a dish with any greens, only about 20 crickets in his tank. He's kinda short, but very plump, a coworker suggested that his growth was stunted, the original owner said he is 4 years old. I asked what we were going to do with him, since we can't sell pets that owners drop off. They were adopting him out. I quickly got my mom and let her hold him, and as soon as she picked him up he gave her a lick and she nearly burst into tears and asked how much he was. After a quick talk to my manager, $30 for him, the tank, lights, everything. Needless to say Xander (named after our favorite Buffy The Vampire Slayer character) came home. He's my mom's birthday present, and I think it made her year.
