Questions about getting first Boa

Well I'm very seriously looking into getting my first boa. I think I may have found the one I want but have a few questions. I'm looking at getting a C.A. Caramel Boa. I am leaning more towards the CA because I really don't know if I want a 7+ foot long boa. The dad of the male I'm looking at is 3.75 feet which I feel is the perfect length. I'm just wondering about the temperament of CA. Are they a good snake to start with?

Also the Boa I'm looking at is a little over a year old. I'm not sure why the breeder held on to him this long, he only became available a couple of months ago though. Is this normal or something I should be worried about?

Some breeds will hold back a snake to see how it colors up for possibly breeding it down the road.
