Hello,

We found this little guy in the middle of our front yard. We're in north-central GA. It didn't show any real aggression. Never opened it's mouth, and seemed to be really flat. I'm not sure if it was starving or just simply flattening itself.

Any idea of what it could be? It was definitely a baby, very small.

Thanks.

Storeria Dekayi - Dekay brown snake.

Yes, it's flattening out to look bigger, and they are a very small species, the photo is of an adult female.

here is one flattened out to bask in the sun, taken in my back yard.

By the way, the abrupt change in angle near the tail is how I know she's a girl.

The males have a steady taper, the females have "wide hips" for live birthing.

not trying to accuse you of anything Peachysteph, I just can't tell because of the picture. Is she alive? Just can't tell is all. (i'm a newb still, can't recognize everything yet!)

Don't feel bad, I can hardly discern if thats just stuck shed around her face or if her head is flattened out too.

Oh, and just for kicks, here is what a baby looks like..

well the thing is that I can hardly see the eyes and I can't tell if that is shed off of her neck or if it's been cut???

That baby is adorable though! Small snakes are so cute. Purely visual snakes for me though, if I'm to keep a small snake, handling is minimal! Too flighty for me, I'd hate to have them wiggle out of my grasp and hurt themselves falling. Part of the appeal for me of ball pythons, relatively small compared to their larger cousins but still have a decently hefty presence. :D

She was indeed alive, and shedding. I moved her to the garden for better protection (she was out in the middle of a freshly cut yard). It was chilly out there and the sun had started to set, so she was moving slowly. Once I put her in the garden she happily moved along.

Sorry the picture isn't that great. I wasn't sure what it was, so I wanted to be safe and not get too close.
