Saying goodbye to Stretch.

I came up to my room to take a shower after football practice last night, and I found poor Stretch laying dead on the floor of his cage. Needless to say, this is a pretty bad loss.

I don't have a whole lot of experience with snakes,
lately I've been considering getting a venomous snake.
I paraphrased it, but this is your introductory post to the forum. You said you didn't have a lot of experience with snakes in general, but were thinking about buying one that could kill you. I hope you have not not obtained one. I do not have a lot of experience with Vines, but they do interest me and I'd like to have one someday not soon. I don't think Vines are beginner snakes, and you bought this snake less than a month ago. They seem to be WC for the most part, and require high humidity. IMO chances are either you received a sick snake to begin with, it was WC and stressed its self to death, or husbandry/feeding was off. As a beginner maintaining high humidity can be over looked very easily - do you still have your viv set up? Check the humidity. We never got a picture of Stretch, and I'm sorry for your loss - but I think you might have gone over your head. Why don't you try a Corn instead? Every paint job imaginable, and not too expensive. Again sorry for your loss, but I think a low maintenance snake like a Corn would be a good choice for you to get started with.

I second this. I know some experienced keepers who have had poor luck keeping vine snakes.

Next time, try something easier (and safer).

Yeah. My guess is that he died from the case of mouth rot that had popped up fairly soon before he died, which I guess could have indicated a respiratory infection as well. I hate to say it but my parents refused to get Stretch to the vet because they simply did not want to pay for his care. I tried to explain the whole principle thing but that didn't work out.

Sucks that your little guy died :( Stuff happens though, Just make sure you learn from this and accept all the advice the people here give you. They mean well.

1. Don't buy WC
2. Don't buy animals you can't get funding to see a vet or proper care (WC)
3. Mouth rot does not mean RI necessarily
4. Mouth rot takes longer than "fairly soon before death"
5. Don't buy a venomous snake
6. Go buy a pet rock

I'm sorry for the death of your snake Stretch. That's never easy.

I recommend you look into what husbandry issues may have played a role, and what you can do to prevent them in the future. As a beginner, I also want to encourage you to try your hand with a corn snake, which are "hardier," before delving into other kinds of snakes. That being said, personally I wouldn't get another snake until you can afford the vet care yourself so that future situations that necessitate vet care can be afforded.

Before you find a new pet start saving your money, get a nice sized Vet emergancy fund saved up. If your parents wont take you to the Vet you must find another way. Refusing any animal Vet care is animal abuse. Let your parents know this too. Part of owning any animal is to provide proper care and Vet visits are included.

You should always have either money set aside or a means of obtaining significant funds quickly whatever animal you wish to own, not doing so is just irresponsible.
