My latest (and last for at least a year lol) sand boa, an Egyptian "normal".
She's sooo sweet! And i love that circle on her head! Can't think of what to name her yet. Something Egyptian-y : ) Though her future boyfriend's name is rather inelegant (Googlie) i feel that she is already elegant, lol

Best face I've seen on a Sand Boa, though, I'm only familiar with Kenyans...

General Names:

Eshe - Life
Kanika - black (since she's half black :) )
Khait - crown (she's got a black circlet, it'd be so cute to name her after a crown!)
Nubit - Golden lady (like with the black)
Tahirah - Pristine

Goddess names:

Nepthys - goddess of immortality, wild birds, moon and night, and the underworld (among other things)
Wadjet (normally depicted as a cobra in hieroglyphics) - justice, time, heaven and hell

Just some ideas! I went and browsed around and found ones with neat meanings :)

(And I was mistaken with Sekmet, it's actually Sekhmet, the lion headed goddess. Perhaps scribe was Sekhet? I'm not sure. my mistake either way :D )

Thank you! Will run the names by the hubby when he gets home, and also see how her personality is. So far she's very, very sweet, alert, and curious!

Here's her future boyfriend

beautiful, both of them. :)

Definitely getting me some sand boas one day...Just curious, what are their basic husbandry requirements? if you don't mind sharing :) You've peaked my interest and I am definitely planning on getting a pair (either of kenyan or egyptian sands) one day!

Thanks guys! I love them, and i'm totally enjoying having some new additions.

Husbandry is pretty simple. Though thoughts vary on what substrate, from crushed walnuts, to aspin, to actual sand (dust free, kiln dried, pre-washed) I know a lot of people who are successful with something they can safely burrow in, and a hot side of 92 or so, and a cool of 77...around both of those number is good, as long as you have both.
They of course thermo-regulate. Despite what some people think, they should always be provided with a water dish. My area tends to be humid, but they do appreciate a humid hide/moist moss tupperware when shedding, and a water dish at all times.

They are ambush predators, as well as constrictors. I rarely see them attack and strike though, but mine are pretty fat and well fed *lol*
When i first got my first female she did jump out of the substrate at me. I've since learned how to fish around for them in the sand and not illicit a strike. : )

I strongly suggest an under tank heater, rather than a light for these guys. They will be down on the bottom, under the substrate, and may only have the tip of their head out...as can be seen by that one pic of the male up there. He is in calcium sand in that shot, and that only lasted a week...it was HORRIBLE dusty, terrible stuff! Do not recommend!

Anyway, they are great. I love them so much! you can do a search and there is a sand boa keepers forum, too. When the time comes there are lots f resources out there and of course all of us here to help you take care of one! : )

Awesome, thanks Jaleely! I use UTH for all of my snakes (though they all have lamps to help simulate day / night phases) so that's no new thing. I would make sure to get non-dusty sand or something sand-like for them to burrow in (I like the concept of sand more than aspen, but if it made the snake healthier I would of course ditch the sand).

It's a far off dream, but it's a realistic one!!

Oh i never responded...we decided to name her Isis : )
It's simple LOL

She just completed her first shed with me. She's doing great! She's decided she really likes to hang out in her shed box even though she's done lol

I like the name Isis. It's very pretty, and obviously fitting.

Great looking animal. You already have a boyfriend picked out so I presume you are going to breed them.

Very nice. I've only had experience with Kenyans and Rough scaled so far.

What differences do these have from Kenyans (as they look similar)? I think Saharan sand boas are smooth without the rough tail and I'm pretty sure they are the only egg laying boas?

I'm really getting into sand boas these days. Have you ever played with communal setups?

Beautiful! I love those markings.
I wish my camera would work for me so I could get pics of mine. It won't focus on the snake though so the head always ends up really blurry.

Without trying to sound condescending what sort of camera is it? Does it or the lens have a minimum focus distance?

It's an old one xD It's pretty crappy as well - I should cave in and buy new one, but I am cheap.

My snake is just a normal kenyan - but I still love the look of the egyptain.

Egyptians and kenyans are the same species-colubrinus.

This is why I'm not very keen on common names. Would they count as a locality?
