View Full Version : Is everything OK?
I have a red tail Boa. This is my first snake. I t has been eating every week and sometime every other week. He is looking like he has a bulge that is starting to alarm me. Can anyone look at these pictures and tell me if I should be worried or this is a normal thing. The last time he ate was close to a week ago.
Thanks In Advance for any help!

Looking at the pics I would expect a present from your boa in about a day or two. They do have tendency to keep things in and then make it count. Unless there are other factors that concern you, and you are sure about your husbandry, I would not be concerned based on those two pictures alone.

Has he defecated yet? If he hasn't in a while he may just need to poo.

I think two reasons one he may have had to big a meal and two needs to poop soak him in a little warm water should get things moving!

yea boas are all different. I have a male that poops every couple weeks, and a female that poops every month or two and the poops are HUGE for her. she buldges up like that too though. you'll notice once he releases your snake will feel like it's half the weight.

What size prey are you feeding him?
To me he looks a little to thick but he also appears to have a poop waiting.

I agree. Huge poop gonna happen soon. My boas can go 5 months with no poop then bam. They lay a football!!
FYI that's not a red tail.
What substrate is it kept on?
Not a red tail? What does it look like it could be? They told me a pastel red tail Boa when i bought it. Sorry I left off the pastel :P
We use a coconut fiber bedding that the pet store recommended.

BCI stands for boa constrictor imperator, which is not a true red tail boa. You have a BCI. BCC stands for boa constrictor constrictor. They are true red tails. There's several differences between the two, the first few things I can think of is color, saddle shape, place of origin..

Yep my red tail is not one too lol! It does sound better then BCI, but I still love my girl!
Anyways like the others say looks like he's working on a nice surprize for you :)

As mine gets a little older, she goes less often. She's fed a nice fat meal once every two weeks (takes a few days for the food bump to go away) but only poos about once every 4-6 weeks. When I first discovered her doing this, it alarmed me. I wanted to soak her because this will usually make them go, then remembered to feel her poopy butt to see if it was soft or hard. Since it was soft I just left her alone to go on her own. IIRC, you should only help them go if it feels hard as this usually indicates constipation. Some snake species are known for holding it in for months at a time. As long as it's not hard, I wouldn't worry. Just kind of keep an eye on it until she goes. Then mark it down somewhere and see if this is becoming a regularity for her so you don't get worried when she doesn't go when you think she should. :)
