I have a month to make an enclosure for a new red tail. thinking of looking for a 55gal and making a top from wood and plastic. pet shop kid said males wont get more than a foot longer. any other options?
also he said I dont need a humidity adder (this is houston, pretty humid) other than a water bowl.
thanks

I personaly feel a 55 is way to small.
My 6'+ male is in a 6x2x20" which is what about double the size of a 55.
Although you can pit a snake in a fishtank its still not a snaketank.
Look at what some people on here have built. I have built some funtional cages but some people on here have built some very nice looking vivs on limited budgets.
Your pet store kid must have cornsnakes.
Ask as many questions as you can here. We know way more than Petsmart. :)

If you go with using a tank cut a piece of cardboard and jam it in the top of the lid (where it covers 3/4 of the lid) that will help trap the heat and humidity in the tank and avoid heat lamps with boas dries out the air creates bad sheds good luck update with pics please

What about replacing the top with a plywood lid covered with plastic either drilled or vents installed?

also the kid said I dont have to worry about humidity. Just the warm water dish to soak would suffice. Bs or no?

The numbers are males.females.unsexed
What arr you going to use for heat and more importantly heat control?
So many people let the pet store guy tell them a heat pad will be fine on its own. Then a few weeks later you realize your temps are all over the place or the mat fails and cooks the snake. Get a thermostat no matter what. If you can't afford it wait to get the snake until you can. What is your enclosure budget?

Pretty much anything the pet store tells you throw it out the window listen to the people on here you will find more consistent advice

Working a deal for this stuff
. There's 2 water bowls, 1 heat pad, 1 lamp and timer, 1 grated tank lid, 1 skull house, 1 rock house, 1 hollow log, 1 log like tank divider, new 5.5 liter bag of t-Rex sanichips, 1/2 bag of aspen bedding and thermometer.
Guess I need a thermostat at least?
I got funds for an enclosure. Have a month to get something together
